cutting a 16 inch carbine barrel to 12 inches

Im pretty set on cutting my new light weight Daniel defence barrel back to 12 inches, im just looking for a little info regarding people currently running 12 inch ar15s and what they think of them, how well they tip the goats over ect.

What I want is a short pointy light rig. but i dont want to do it if it is worthless afterwards

It's getting pretty short for a .223. Should still go alright out to 150m or so. I'm thinking of doing an SBR type upper but it would be a toy.

I thought a barrel could be any length as long as the whole rifle had an o.a.l of 762mm

are you saying 150m for deer/goats?

yea its light, but I want short. so I can throw it over my shoulder and its nice and compact
finished length without the suppressor will be 770 ish just to leave a bit for recrowning sake

The Effects Of Reducing The Barrel Length On Velocity And Accuracy In The 223 Remington

Im interested in knowing how well they knock things over with the short barrel, sort of SBR but more just nice light carry.

yes its legal to have them this short. GC even sells a 10 inch one.
legality wise this is completly legit. I just want to speak with someone who runs a short barrel 223 for hunting

Iv allways got my standard 16 inch if this all goes pear shaped, and to me there is no point having two very similar barrels when this one isnt even as accurate
both are 16 inch By the way the standard one is a heavy profile,

so what Im thinking is shorten the light one and leave the standard one standard.

isn't there some rule of thumb formula like twist + 1 for all the powder to burn ?

so if you have 1 in 10 twist, then 11-12 inches is ok ?

that cant be true, seeing as there is one in 7 twist and one in 12 twist barrels in 223 and they both shoot the same bullet

bugger it im off to the engineer 12 inches here I come

yup, thinking about it now, it would depend on the burn rate of the powder as well...

it is probably worth bearing in mind that cutting the barrel back and possibly depending on the size of the gas port it may affect the dwell time of the gas system and cause you issues.

Then again it might not be an issue at all, and might even reduce the violence of the standard carbine gas (assuming that is what you're running) system.

Maybe google stories of people building their own sbr's in the states to see if it could be a problem or not, or maybe PM someone like spanners to see if he has any thoughts based on his experiences before you make the final call.

well its a bit late for all that worrying now, shes finished at 12.something inches.

Im not so worried about dwell time while I am running a suppressor as that will increase the back pressure slightly.
I think it was overgassing at 16 anyways.

looks really good nice and short. best bit is the guy done a beaut thread and took his time demonstrating to the apprentis while I was watching really taking his time, then only charged me $25

now, tonight we will see if she shoots

one things for sure its nice and short.

If it was carbine gas and 16" it was overgassed anyway. If its undergassed even with the suppressor you can get it opened up and tune it down with an adjustable block (if you can get your hands on one).

12.5" is a very handy length and what my in-progress rifle will finish at (with a permanently fixed muzzle device of my own design input), albeit in a different calibre.

    Post pics.

From my experience with the 14.5" .223 it'll work fine to reasonable distances. Be realllllllll careful with shot placement on anything bigger than a goat though!
