Putting together a 284 at 18" and am looking for advice on which way to go with the barrel.
I would like a fluted barrel but have read different opinions on if this should be done if not already done from factory. I have also read that it is not good practice to cut back into flutes when shortening a barrel.
I have seen a lot of both done but are there any gunsmiths on here that would like to advise on best way forward?

If you don't already have the barrel/gun, then don't bother with the fluting and go for the bbl length you want. The weight saving from fluting on an 18in bbl would be minimal. Just put 2 rounds in the mag instead of 3.

My 260 Originally had a 22inch barrel fluted I chopped it to 18 it’s fine just looks a little silly with no ending to the flutes

My Tikka T3x in .308 is the Superlite model that comes with a 20" fluted barrel. Darren at DPT Shortened it to 16" and threaded it for his suppressor. Still shoots 3/4"-1" at 100yds. Also 3"-31/2" at 3oo with 125 Accubonds so hasn't affected accuracy at all. He does heaps of them so quite happy to go by his recommendation. Give him a call he's very helpful and obliging.
Barrel is a trueflite and is very slightly thicker than a factory t3 like just a touch
