Dad and Son rifle for goats and fallow

Has anyone got any ideas on a lightweight rifle that Dad and Son could use - his Son is seven - which I think is a bit young - but that’s his call
He is thinking 223 or 243 - he is thinking maybe cut and re-join a wood stock - an engineer thinking outside the square!
Is there an adjustable stock out there that might slide in and out?
I guess Dad will carry it around and let the Son sit behind it now and again

Are you reloading? Easy to run a few slow rounds for him and build them up as he grows.

243 potentially with a suppressor and light (60gr) projectiles might work.

Best bet will be a 223 with a suppressor. Howa mini action or a tikka.

You need to consider a simple and smooth action for the young fulla to operate (physical strength) and reduce the noise and boot as much as possible to prevent the development of a flinch or any psychological issues.

I have just gone through this with my wife and we settled on a tikka t3 cut down (at both ends) with a suppressor.

if you arent going to stretch barrel past 150 yards...buy a norinco/bisley 7.62x39mm and cut it and can it...... the stock issue could be taken care of with a recoil pad fitted for you...off for lad.
more room for error than the .223 with similar recoil/report /price of ammo.
the price is low enough that you wont flinch cutting stock short......I can shoot with a really short stock no issues.....try it for yourself. a slip on pad will add an inch no trouble at all.

as much as I love the rugged ruskies....if you want young fella to use it you will probably have to build up the pistol grip as they are waaaaaay to long for little hands, we used 2 layers of tapered jandle taped in place on the .410 and still found young fella crept his hand forward to reach trigger.

Get one of the Howa ranchland (light weight) rifles in whichever calibre, pick up a spare hogue stock from someone who has changed it for next to nothing, shorten it to desired lrngth and then swap the action between the two stocks depending who is using it.

This is a very good option. This calibre with a can is very effective and forgiving. They are cheap enough that it does not hurt the wallet to start cutting, and cheap to feed. They would be my suggestion too. I saw one somewhere that ha a hinged grip by the trigger. If big hands were using it, the grip sat back against the wood, but if little hands wanted to use it, the grip swung forward to shorten the stretch to the trigger. I wish now that I had taken a few pictures as it was very simple yet very effective but also very difficult to describe...

The person who made it was in the process of making the butt stock extension (for the bigger shooter) move to the cheek piece to lift the smaller persons face on a cheek rise. He was trying to get a swivel hinge mechanism working rather than clip on / clip off but I lost track of him and don't know if he got it working.

If by some random chance he is a member of this forum or even just reading this, perhaps he could add some pics or send some to me and I will post them......
