    Difference in suppressor brands

Looking at purchasing a second hand rifle but seeing what's around everything seems to have different branded suppressors? Does the brand of suppressor matter or what do I look out for? Can they end up being shot out and not working effectively being second hand?

In my experience- unless your shooting a magnum rifle or something with a short barrel - basically any suppressor will work well enough, some being better than others - DPT being more or less the standard on what a well priced suppressor will do, second hand ones will potentially need a good clean, but I’ve never had one “shot out” enough it doesn’t work. The most important thing is to make sure it’s the right thread to suit the rifle - and try match the calibre of rifle to the suppressor.

Thanks for the information. I've noticed Dpt can add on baffles, and other brands are almost a single unit? Do the extra baffles take out more recoil? Cheers

Yup, the longer / larger / more baffles the more space in the suppressor - generally the better it will be.

Right now I have a 300wsm magnum with a maniatis suppressor with an end break and it tames the rifle significantly over not having one.

    Difference in suppressor brands

If you’re willing to spend the money and weight is something you care about, Optima’s are amazing. If you want one that you’ll probably have for life and can replace baffles as they get worn then DPT is the way to go, you just need to take it apart now and again to make sure the baffles done seize. There’s a reason they’re super popular. Also another vote for the muzzle break addition, put one on my DPT on a 7RM. Incredible difference in my opinion

Nothing wrong with the Gunworks suppressors either and possibly more likely to be found on rifles down that way being a local business in Chch

Another for the Gunworks. One piece of advice I suggest people consider seriously is if you are getting a suppressor then get the suppressor manufacturer to do any rifle threading... And because fitting one ususally requires access to the particular firarm for fitting, and shipping is not cheap, if you can drive to your nearest then that would be my recommendation... EG you are in Ashburton so freight to DPT and back will add $160 to the bill but the drive to Gunworks would cost you much less. Conversly if you lived nearer Hamilton then DPT would be your best bet....

If the rifle you are looking at already has one then most work to a similar extent (unless it is one of the reverend rog ones ...If you know- you know)

What really sets supressors apart is service received from the company.....In this regard, I can say Gunworks has been great. I have heard similar things about DPT but never actually owned one myself...

Of course it matters.. some just "do the job" dpt, gunworks, hardy etc...

Some do a amazing job, A-tec, Oceania defense, Ase...etc
    Big price difference too

Themounthunter - all good advice above and here's my .05 cents worth...
Hardy or DPT - I own and have used both extensively. My frame of reference for both, is on the ends of 2 different .308 Win rifles both with 16" barrels. Both have had lots of use.
I reckon folks like DPT 'cause they get to pull them apart and clean them - they reckon this is great. I find it annoying. I do though...because I can. Never find much "gunk" and after after talking to the likes of Greg Duley he also reckons, on something like a .308, they'll not be gumming up on the amount of rounds a typical hunter will fire. On that, I've done a number of years commercial game recovery so prolly have fired more rounds than many hunters - or not - but probably...
I have no experience of cans on bigger / magnum calibers so defer to those who have for actual evidence of issues or otherwise.
If I could have just one, I'd buy the Hardy because you CANNOT pull it apart, so it's one more thing my OCD doesn't have to worry about - the decision is made for me - I like it. It's a great supressor!
But I DO like that my DPT fits neatly inside an old 29" mountain bike tube which is an awesome free cover!!! The tube came out of a 29" x 2.4" tyre, but is for 2.25" to 2.6" tyres, incase you're interested :-)

Oh, and both are over barrel which is awesome as it keeps the length down.
Hope this helps in some way.
    All the best.

I will buy any day a product I can service rather than one I can not... I can clearly smell ammonia in my suppressor even after 10 shots. The few times I forgot to clean my A-tech A2 I had white crystal in it and some corrosion on the baffles. I also have a DPT and cleaned it as per instructions never had an issue since.

I don't know about A-Tech and their recommended maintenance / maintenance schedule - here's some words from Hardy for those that may be interested. WD-40 quarterly.

    Difference in suppressor brands

DPT and gunworks are both great. Heard good things about A-tec but you also pay for the quality with them. In terms of gun fitting I have found DPT to be very helpful and efficient for buying new bushings to suit different rifles. Just find a DPT suppressor with the right barrel thread, remove old rear bush, install suppressor, measure the diameter of the barrel at the point where the over-barrel suppressor comes back to with a pair of verniers. Send DPT pics and the measurement and they will quickly ship you out a new custom bush for $15 ish. Easy as. DPT also have good extra accessories for magnums like the stainless baffle and the muzzle brake end cap, both of which I use on the 300wsm to tame the muzzle jump/recoil and extend the life if the first baffle. Easy to replace first baffle if it is “shot out” but not that many people fire enough ammo to shoot out a suppressor in general I would say. Second hand DPTs could have pretty jammed up baffles from lack of maintenance but you can buy specific clamps to undo them, or just use some bike inner tube rubber and a couple of hose clamps to get enough grip to undo stubborn baffles.

Darren was helpful when he was in Tok. Nothing has changed apart from the fact that his cans have got better. There is the best and there is the rest. My mate up the coast has a Dan Can because he does not have to clean it. Gives it a fair amount of abuse. Like calibres etc we will always have our own preferences.
