Dirty barrels ....
My son and I have been re zeroing our rifles with suppressors for a hunting trip next weekend.
Its been a mission.
Anyway, to remove at least one factor from the equation I gave both tikkas (223, 243) a clean using a jag , patches and a nylon brush.
Try as I might I could never get a clean patch ... Theres always black shit onit ... Which I assume is carbon.
I would run a dry patch thru, followed by another soaked in hoppes, then several more dries, then the brush, and finally another hoppes cycle.
Any ideas ??
For the record they're both shooting ok ish now

Sounds like carbon for sure. Bronze brush and KG1 or SLP Carbon Killer. Nylon brushes are no good IMO to get rid of carbon properly. Same with Hoppes if your serious. Soaking maybe, but I could never be fucked with that.

Nup, both stainless.
Also, whats the word on wire brushes ... at the risk of starting a bit of a debate ;) ??
People either love or tell you you'll wreck you barrel with them ..

Bronze are good. It shouldn't take much cleaning to close groups back up. Worry less about black soot and more about marksmanship.

If you think a copper brush will wreck your bore then a projectile being pushed down it with 50,000 psi behind it will fuck it no time at all.......

Hoppes is slow but does work.
I put a couple of wet patches threw and leave it while watching telly then dry patch bronze bush 5 or 10 times couple more wet patches and wait.
Repeat til clean
Overnight in the safe can help and give it another crack the next day.
Its a bit like keeping a chainsaw sharp if you let it get real blunt youv got a mission getting it sharp again and cutting straight but if you give it a touch up as soon as it dulls its a piece of Piss.
Even if i don't clean i always put one wet patch threw before goin back in safe. Makes it so much faster to clean when you get round to it.

I hadbthe kg set up but have gone back to boretech. 3 wet patchers then brush a few times then wet patch then leave for 10 min then wet patch then couple dry and oil then loose dry patch then put it away.

I dont worry about getting all the copper out until it stops shooting good

Mate, Have you tried cleaning them after shooting while they are still warm?
Not Hot, warm... Helps to get the crud off easier.
Use the bronze brush and soak it over night if it still wont come out.

I've bought an electric cleaning kit, rod down the barrel, sealed with orings, filled with solvent and turn on. No don't know how it goes, as haven't used it yet, but said to work ok

AutoSol just don't let the patches exit

Righto, success !!!
Hoppes, ran 2 patches thru, left the 2nd one in for 15-20, dry patch, brush, three more dries.. Repeated 3 times.........worked
Thanks fellas
