Do gun safes have to be bolted to the floor or wall?

Forgive my ignorance here. I'm a novice shooter looking to get my own licence finally.

Always went out with the old man growing up and used his guns but now live in Auckland.

I've been looking to get a safe as part of the licensing process and I was wondering if they have to be bolted to the floor or wall to pass an inspection.

I have a really strange shaped flat and my main storage cuboard is triangular and I'm a bit concerned about being able to bolt something far enough into the cuboard to actually get to the beams in the wall.

If a safe just needs to be locked, then I think I'll be ok.

Anybody know about the rules for Auckland?

It will have to be fixed to the structure one way or another mate.

Thanks for the swift reply. Guess that means I'll have to stick with a smaller safe that will fit further back into the cupboard.

A gunsafe and contents was stolen from rural Te Aroha just in the last month...because it wasn't bolted down they just picked it up and walked away.

A strong chain could probably be used (slow any would be burglar down), make it as hard as possible for them.

The available battery powered disc grinders make short work of any chain or door locks. Opoturnist theives may not carry them but any serious theif will be in and out in no time flat. Disguising your save is a better option,I belief.

IMO I think it's a joke that a plywood box bolted to the wall/floor with a lock on it gets the nod from Police - guess it stops the kids getting hold of them, if nothing else.

Mine ain't bolted down but then again it does weigh close on 1000kg!

The more secure the better. I live in a modern home, so have it bolted to the framing but that's only wood, so I put bolts into the concrete floor too.

+1 with the disguising it! Mine is bolted down but is also well hidden
