Has some OK glass on the current rifle that could get swapped over. What sort of magnification should I throw on, with reasonable quality glass, to get out to 1km?

EBF's your man, but he's at a comp today in Tauranga - his advice to me was 6-20+ mag - and good dialable vertical to reach out beyond with the 7rm. Reticle is important too. Throw on a 20 Moa rail too to add a bit more range before you get to top out where clicks get a bit more unreliable ( I got mine from waitaki for just over a hundy)! His are really dimensionally correct. I went vortex and sightron for mine.
The other way is to get Burris signature zee rings with the offset inserts in it. They will give the 20MOA or so without needing a rail. You will need about 25MOA comeup to get to 1000 yds with a 7mm mag.
Why not just rebarrel the 243 she has to say a 1:7 twist? Could shoot those new slippery ELDM's Hornady just released.
Welll I personally can think of several........................................... ..........dozen
@gadgetman If you are up this way on a Saturday morning come shoot with me. I seem to be shooting plates most Saturday morning at some distance over 3,4 or 500 + (except for today when I tipped over my first ever porker on my first ever proper piggy hunt with dogs)
Good choice on 7RM. Grab a Sightron 6-24 S3, it has 100 MOA dial range and another 20 in the MOA reticle. With a canted base and Burris rings you will be able to use all of it :-)
yup :-) you gonna do it in any case, so just get it over with...
