Thread: Extended Mag Box and Action Bead Blasting - Rem 700

As funds permit I am gathering components for my next rifle being a 7mm saum built on a rem 700 short magnum action. I figure as part of the process I might aswell put on an extended mag box so there are no length issues. Plan is a 20” barrel running 160gr pills, probably the 168 VLD at this stage. Picture below shows the length of the current mag box. What should I be buying and where is the best place to buy it?

Second question. The action is black but the writing on it indicates it is stainless underneath. I presume this is a coating done from the factory by remington. I would like to leave the bolt black but return the action and floor plate etc to stainless/grey to match the barrel that will go on (Bartlein). Is this just a simple bead blast?

I think you find its already been lengthened as a standard is just over 2.8 . They can be stretched to 3.150 as Greg Duleys fatmax article. That size as is will be fine .Also that isnt a standard rem box it looks like Wyatt .Sounds like it will be a goodie . I still think Rem actions are the very good but the short ones are really handicapped by not being 3inches standard .

Mag length looks to be plenty enough, mag fit loads with the 168vld’s in my mod 7 are 2.825oal and leaves a very small gap so they don’t bind. Interestingly they shot better than close to the lands/single feed, like a 60thou jump. You could have the chamber throated to suit what you have?
Kinda like the black action(awr ceracoat?), not thought of leaving it?

Can be stretch th 3.2inchs using the wyatts mid length kit being an actual remington not a clone.

Seems to be a few saying the current box is long enough. If that’s the case then awesome, even easier.

I have a full box of 168 VLD’s sitting on the shelf if you need some.
Not sure how available they are in the shops at present.

The mag box I have looks to be single stack but I could be wrong. Does anyone know if this will hold 3 saum rounds? Or being single stack will it restrict to 2 rounds? As I don't have stock etc yet I am unable to try and find out for myself. Thanks

Unlikely to be single stack. Staggered stack and probably two rounds.

Yeah, staggered stack and only 2 in mag.
Luckily, being a Saum, that’s one more than you’ll ever need.

Can you get any that will take three in mag or is it always gonna be two?

Your mag box looks low in the sidewall to me. Have you tried putting any rounds in it?

Nope I don’t have any rounds or brass etc yet unfortunately

Slap some .284’s in there, might give you an idea
