Firearm Import List
Quick question on the approved import list....
Importing an AR for example, is a AR an AR, or would your specific MAKE of AR have to be on the list. For example, I can't see NEA on the list, or a lot of others that are definately coming into the country. Not just AR's either - is that list gospel? Ever been updated?
And as for importing an upper reciever, lower reciever, barrel etc, and building that here. I'd get an import permit from the AO, but as it's parts, would they need to be on the list as well?
Thanks
Grue

The list is an ancient thing that simply list models pre approved for import. It is meaningless with regards to AR's.

so , I have just spoken to my AO in the kapiti area , and I mentioned the NEA ar to him and the fact its not on the list , . he said no problem , its an ar style , and they are aware of them here , so ok to import ... I am looking at getting one direct from Canada , and wanted to check the rules as well
cheers

How do you plan on shipping it here? Canada Post SUCKS BALLS and costs a fortune. Why not just buy one locally?
-
well , im being gifted the rifle , the guy im getting it off did some work for nea in building a new ar18 lower , ... he has offered it to me and I gladly accepted it .... I know he has to de-register from Canada and I guess just send it , it will be sent in "A" cat configuration

The Police have a couple of lists they refer to. Generally they will look for the item on the public list and if not there they will look at internal lists.
Dealers imports are scrutinised at a higher level due to the quantities. We recently applied for a permit to import bulk Spikes Tactical. It was declined because it was not on any list. We now have to bring in a sample of this brand amongst others to get official approval. Many here already have Spikes so the assumption we had was that it was an approved brand. It isnt. We have to repeat this with 4 other manufacturers brands too just to get approval for what is a part that is shared by many manufacturers of AR15
Individuals will often get away with importing a single part. An AO will look at his internal list and see NEA and think that is fine. Its sounds like you are looking at bringing in a prototype AR18 part? If this is the case it is not approved. If I was you I would get down to the Police Station and get the AO to sign the import permit immediately before he realises that an AR18 is not an AR15.
Worst case the permit will be issued subject to inspection when it lands. They may ask you to build a complete gun for the purpose of testing.

sorry for the confusion , it is a standard ar 15 nea ... not an ar18 , he did some work for nea on a new ar18 lower , I will hopefully be getting a complete ar15 off the guy .
