    Firearms to Stewart island

Have heard a rumour (from a reliable source and can't get an answer from head office) that from October (or there abouts) all firearms on the Stewart island (real journeys) ferry will have to be in hard cases.

Theread will be a separate tub they go in that is padded and locked, you will sign that the firearm has bolt out and made safe.

The unsettling part is that if they aren't picked up within 30mins they are delayed abandoned and will be handed over to police!

Can understand them having to change things I guess but imagine there will be a few people caught out by this

That is just another way of encouraging people to not declare what they are transporting.

If not declared they will be in an unpadded tub bouncing around on the deck!

To be honest i think the system did need and overhaul as currently you hand them over to the lady behing the desk and show they are unloaded with bolt out, they then go into the office until the ferry leaves. Prefer the idea of them being locked up but really dont like that they can be declared abandoned. Means you have to have your vehicle (lift organized) at the terminal as i wouldnt have time to walk home and get it.

What about via plane? Does it have to be in a hard case?

Checked with soemeone there, no it doesnt. On fact one of the guys there prefered soft cases as its easier to open them up and check they are empty rather than having people find keys to the the locks and mucking around

Yes, what are they afraid of? A ferry-jacking? Just another way to use elfunsafety to regulate guns out of existence, or under the bonnet as 40mm alludes to.

I gave one of their employees a stern telling off one morning, after watching him thrown my rifle in its bag into an empty steel container from about 3m away.

Guess he didnt realise the contents were worth many thousands and constructed partly of glass.

Ouch.... would have done the same! Odd it went in a tub as usually they hand carry them on and they go up the front ontop of the life jackets

See they do care it’s to stop the panic when the boat starts sinking

Hey @223nut was told when I went by the friendly staff at Bluff that next time i came that yes i would need lockable hard case for the firearms to come on the ferry. They were all good and nice to deal with shit website though but gave em a call when I was sorting tickets and they had me sorted right quick. Don’t see it as a big deal really but good on you for giving us all a heads up

I would have thrown the guy overboard...

At least in my mind, I would have.
