My hunting mate who is not on here had his Sako .223 bolt stolen....he has a mate in Wisconsin USA who has bought him one for a reasonable price but it's just sitting there as none of them know the correct procedure about sending it to N.Z.
So I offered to ask on here to find out the tried and trusted ways of doing this?

I would suggest to contact the police directly and ask them. Your not allowed to import a receiver, the bolt aint a receiver so it should be possible to import it.
They'll most probably inform you to get a import permit.
You will need an export permit from the USA which is USD $250 as bolts are a regulated item same as receivers and rifle barrels but not shotgun barrels.
Not a great idea as if you are caught exporting it from the US without an export permit you a committing a federal crime and are likely to be staying in the US far longer than planned. You can’t get an export permit if you are not a US citizen.

If your mate needs the bolt, he can always procure other rifles from the USA and put them all under 1 permit which will still cost USD $250. But that's like spending more money to save a few cents. But for discussion sake, Borderview International is one company that specialises in overseas export and I recall their NZ agent is USAGuns. Otherwise talk to Target Sports in Tauranga who might be a cheaper option i.e. they might procure that 1 bolt for your mate.Quote:

The small parts exemption is irrelevant to a complete bolt which is what the OP's mate is trying to get from the USA. A complete bolt is a regulated item irrespective of its dollar value. Check the list from Borderview International on what is actually covered under the Small Parts Exemption list. The small parts exemption value at the moment is $500 for Canada and $100 for NZ/AUST but is irrelevant to the discussion.Quote:

Insurance? Workmate just claimed insurance after he lost a bolt for his pretty well worn Tikka, and insurance paid out full price of a new rifle ~$1600

Same here, I have two Sako Bolts waiting in the US, later got two stocks (CZ & Sako M78 22 Hornet) some barrels that were rebored like 9yrs ago & got caught in the post & my friend got a little charge & I got a big cost, barrels now cost like $900 each I would say lol !
I now need a trigger guard & magazine for a Sako 85 from there but again it would have to wait in the US !
