    Is this a good deal?

    Hi there
My younger brother has posted on here about hunting and how he’s keen to start chasing deer himself. Me being a pig hunter I’ve shot bugger all deer! So I want to learn with him about stalking etc. I have been offered by a friend a Remington 788 wood stock 308 has a wee bit of surface rust not real bad though. Bore looks okay has a cheap fixed power scope it’s 308 and I can probably get it for around $350/$400 would it be a good buy for that ?
    Thanks

The 788 was Remingtons ‘entry level’ rifle, until the mid 80’s from memory
Nothing wrong with them, and that seems a reasonable price.

Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

Sounds like a fair deal to me. They were an excellent value rifle in their day.

Would be good gun to start on, should be able to shoot out to 200m with confidence of hitting your target. As for price it's probably about right, ask if you can try it at a range. You will always remember your first gun so I'd get ontop of the rust

788's are known for there accuracy and 308 is a good allrounder, price is right too.

yip a good deal...being a remington you can upgrade it till the cows come home if the desire hits you...being .308 it will do the job...you say you mostly a pig hunting man...grab some winchester 180 grn plain jane cup n core boreing old school factory ammo and go and ENJOY using it. the 180s dont boot, its more of a shove and the terminal side of things is pretty darn impressive, good for your porkers too, they expand and dump energy really well, animals dont go far.
