Ok, thought a better picture with the Valmet 308 was due for a bit of Walnut & Steel comparison... very happy with it.
The wife even had a fondle, said it was heavy and smells funny... that's pretty cool, considering she has never even looked twice at anything else...

I hated the ones we had in service. Trashed by over cleaning, constant stoppages, inaccurate.
I used one out of a helicopter prior to joining the Army which was in better condition than some of the ones we were issued.
Never liked them to be honest.

Yeah i have fired a couple of trashed ex-army L1A1s, they had been to hell and back. It also seems that some of the armourers didn't know how to set head space. My L1A1 was ex air force and in great condition (probably only been through a few barrels). Never missed a beat. To be honest as much as I love L1A1's my G1 (German issue FAL) was a far better quality rifle complete with chrome bore. This would have been my choice as a combat rifle.

What's the purpose of the carry handles on the L1a1, besides the obvious but seemingly unnecessary?

Just the obvious, they are heavy fuckers. And you have to remember that it was thought a good idea at the time as several rifles from the same time frame had them-maybe as the into action time from the handle was much faster than the sling options of the time

Got the new little Ruger to the range today. Took about 5 shots to get on paper then shot these, with only the time it took for me to walk to and from the 100m target to cool down between groups. With some load development and a little trigger work I reckon things would tighten up, the 3 shot group is just under 1" and the two 5 shot groups are both just under 1.5", and pretty consistent considering I was using handloads with 165gn Nosler Accu-bonds, Black Hills 175gn match and Australian Outback factory soft points. It still points well with a fairly big scope on it, and the ejection and feeding are both very positive. The muzzle brake works well, but man is it loud.

Haven't posted in here in a while, here's the latest acquisition I got a while back.
338 Edge, 24 inch barrel, single feed, predator action, christiansen carbon fibre stock, terminator brake. Got rid of the nightforce and replaced it with the steiner T5XI, lovely bit of kit.
