I do not know anything about them and cannot understand what I read about them
Can someone who uses or has used them explain the basics?

Have just taken ownership of a very nice Baikal 7.62x39 and has open "peep sights" but I cannot see without glasses and when looking along with glasses it don't line up and I am looking over glasses.

So these style optics in question

Can I adjust a diopter for my very poor sight like a normal Scope?
    How does one sight in
I only have 1/2" Dovetail for mounting (but could adapt weaver rail)

    Lastly
Way are they so Forking expensive???

only had experience with the cheaper versions........ a drop of moisture where the laser projects the holograph out would refract the crosshair/dot all over the show...... on a fine day with an AR style rifle really good as you can keep both eyes open for target aquisition
having said that i imagine the better branded ones are dearer cos they are that much better?

I will send you one in a few days. Looking at one will explain everything as to how they work.
Pm me your addy. It is a pistol sized one, has a few bits with it. You can have it.

If you want a new one look on a ali express.
Heaps of them for under 100US. Cheap and nasty but once zeroed I haven't had a problem with them.

Think of it like a projector for watching movies. The dot/ crosshair is projected onto the glass from the back.

They have unlimited eye relief, and provided are decently made don't require that you be directly behind as the shape of the glass means the dot is always on target

They can be zeroed, have a little up down left right adjustment screw.

Some people with dicky eyes do struggle, often a dot is blurry and doesn't allow them to focus?

Yeah if you have astigmatism (heaps of.people do myself included dispite having perfect vision) they look like a starburst. This is true of any laser projected sight, but not so on a true holographic sight.

If you have tired eyes sarvo a proper holographic might be the way to go

I used a red dot on a baikal rather than a Holographic one. Again with a nil magnification and it simply puts a red dot where the bullet is supposed to go. (The dot is on a lens in the scope and not a laser with a dot on the target itself) So when looking through a scope you see a cross hair, when looking through these you see a red ot where the cross would be.

Great for close up bush hunting or fast acquisition but less so for longer pin point accuracy type shots. They would be ideal on a wee baikal in that calibre....

I have a couple of these Nikko ones at $60 new (so not the expensive ones) but the adjust like a normal scope and fit straight onto the Baikals.

And I think there are a couple of this style as well but they are dearer. They fit normal rings yet still are a red dot with "both eyes open". The ones I have are Arctic Fox I think.

I bought the Baikal above off a Forum Member
Then before I collected it (just yesterday) I bought Philops Kimber Montana 7m-08 (which I am super impressed with)

So I was partly regretting the Baikal purchase - but when I looked at it yesterday - completely lost all regrets
Most Russian weaponry I have seen before are pretty ho-hum and plain and lacking character - but this completely surprised me and I look forward to using in Roar and on Bush pig hunting
Have some loaded Subsonic and 150g ordinary loads to try out - Sub be a 1st for me

Prior owner was a perfectionist and an enthusiast - big thanks to you

    Oh and PS
Big thanks above to ALL the feedback etc on sights
I need to do something as the open sights will not work well with me.

I don't want to "bulk" it up to much - that is why I started looking at those sights in top photo (don't even know what they called da)

Would SUP be a hindrance to one of those sight options ???

We had the blue label one on some of our loan rifles for driven boar:

They worked really well, used them when out culling too. The only trouble you will have as light fades it will be more difficult to pick your target. You could still see the dot clear as but its not much use if you don't see what you shooting at. We had detach mounts so could change from dot to scope in 40 sec.
Couldn't find a picture of the zeiss on the rifle.

The Mrs had a Nikko red dot on her Baikal 7.62 and it worked ok just looked a bit odd, now she got a low mag small scope on it.
Nice timber on that Baikal BTW.

Nothing is tough about having a 70 lb bow and looking like an uncoordinated praying mantis while trying to draw it back.
