a mate texted me this link just before Marlin Semi automatic .17 mach 2 | Trade Me have a read od the discripsion and look at the last photo
any ideas what might be worng with it and if its fixable?

Wasn't that a large issue with the 17's a few years ago in semi?

Yes it was started with the 22 mag semis. Being blow back they can start opening while pressure is too high ripping the case once a bit of fouling has built up. Chamber polishing may be an option?

Yeah I think that's why Savage came out with their new 'delayed blowback' .17 semi, the A17 I think?

I don't know if the 17hm2 has those issues, it's a necked down 22lr case so shouldn't have the higher pressure of the larger wmr/hmr case.

Obviously something wrong though!

I wouldn't buy an hm2 even if it was working right though, pain in the ass finding ammo for them now I think.
