Well as it happens I had no steel shot I ended up using hardened No.4(?) lead shot, works like a charm and thanks to advice from @Hindquarters the action is all back together and seems to function.

PS- don’t have your right thumb anywhere near the ejection port when jiggling the cocking handle into place and it doesn’t hold and you’re on blood thinners..
