The politicians don’t need to fuck with the law- they simply need to ensure the police and courts enforce the laws we have in place already and see that meaningful sentences are handed out. If there’s not enough room in prisons then start removing body parts
this needs to be moved to a more prominant place on the board

Here is the body of an email response to the Politician concerned . I havent sent it yet , thought others might like to have relevant input to this first draft.
Dear sir
I have recently read your proposed amendment to section 38 of the Arms Act 1983 and am seriously dismayed that this amendment does not address anything to do with criminal usage of firearms.
Your amendment makes law abiding citizens suddenly become criminals because they have shortened their legal firearm , no matter by how* much.
Had your amendment said Section 38A Shortened Firearms* " an unlicensed person , or a person engaged in criminal activity must not ..." then I could see some benefit to society. But this is simply another blow to the law abiding firearms owners who do not pose any threat to the Police or society as a whole.
The current law states a minimum length of 762 millimetres for a rifle. Your amendment makes no mention of any minimum legal length , but implies that any length shorter than that which left the manufacturer will now be illegal. This opens a can of worms for every gunsmith in the country who currently recrowns rifle barrels as part of their daily workplace - but have now made the owner of that rifle a criminal. And every gunsmith in the country who fits a suppressor to a firearm, as shortening the barrel is a common part of fitting that suppressor.
Under Section 38B you are proposing a permit for the holding of firearms with shortened barrels.Further reading suggests that this permit will only be available to holders of a B category Firearms Licence , ie pistol club members. I also not that this permit has a life of 12 months only. Does the New Zealand Police have the clerical capacity to handle yet another firearms permit , in view of the recent changes to the as yet untested Firearms Licence Application system?*
I feel this is an extremely poorly thought out amendment, and the only people who will be affected by this are the law abiding firearms owners of this country. Where are the steps to curtail or punish the criminal element who do not respond to any such laws? What steps will you take to punish those criminals caught with sawn off firearms ?
I see this as yet another way of imposing restrictions on law abiding people* who historically have rolled over and let politicians shaft them. I suspect there will be much input from those people this time - please take note listen to them. After all - they all have a vote at General Election time.

Nice work, I’ve sent mine in already
Yep I've sent something in very similar. EVERYONE MUST respond to this.
I've had said mp messaging me back.
He is listening or so he appears to be.
What immense stupidity that load of codswollop amendment is.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms
me to we don,t need wankers like this in parliament burning up tax payers money
Yeah I mean it would mean that anything you do which makes your firearm shorter will make you an instant criminal. So fit a thiner recoil pad ................ criminal.
Cynical part o me says thats exactly what they meant to do, its easy to find criminals when you have all their current addresses
I know what I'm gonna say may be frowned upon and as much as I encourage us all to be polite in response to this (as I will be....)
....
But seriously, they can kiss my hairy ass.
Yes Rushy, that one certainly looks like it was thought out well doesn't it. If this is the result of an MP and Police getting their heads together, ... if their collective brains were made of gunpowder I don't think there would be enough there to ruffle a moustache let alone blow a single hat off!![]()
There are only three types of people in this world. Those that can count, and those that can't!
Just the standard response (thank you, we will look into this) from one of his minions, or something of substance ?
Wairarapa has a strong national base, lots of rural voters. I sincerely hope the voters let the party management in that region know exactly what they think of such a poorly thought out piece of drivel. I suspect they could do significantly better than the current MP...

Nope surprisingly not.
Actively engaged in conversation.
I let him know he was about to single handedly alienate 200,000+ law abiding firearms owners from ever voting National again.
Excuse the politics admin.
Funny how Politicians react when their jobs potentially on the line
