Hi,
So a couple of days ago I bought my first ever centrefire - a Savage Axis 7mm08 stainless.
I know it's a cheap gun and heaps of people probably think they are crap but it's all I can afford as I am a full time student...
So, being a brand new gun, I've been looking into how to break it in and the process to do so, holy crap there is so many different ways people recommend.
I was wondering what you guys reckon? What's the way you guys do it??

I didn't realise it would be that easy! I was reading for the first 5 shots I would need to clean the barrel after each one, then clean after each 5 shots after that.
Some people do that, other people don't bother. Whether it makes any difference is up for debate.
I'm not sure if Savage give any specific advice in the wee booklet/manual that comes with their rifles but I can have a flick through one if you don't have a copy to check yourself?

With a new rifle, give it a clean before you fire it, just to get any packing grease/other manufacturing crap out.
Then the rest is up to you, i believe the whole break in thing is so the manufacturers can sell more ammo and barrels!
But each to their own, i have never done it and my rifles shoot and clean just fine!

Good question. I found my own answer after I found out the reasoning of why I'm doing it first.
I cleaned at each shot for the first five. Then between again at number 10, 20, 30 then 40.
Peace of mind really Only but I did it.
Ive done this too, but after hearing/reading so much about it, i wouldnt bother now....
I agree with all the above.
Your barrel is what it is, a mass produced part that did cost probably less than $us60 to make.
It is not a $300/600 custom barrel.
None the less it is a good habit to take care of it , specially as it is your first rifle.
Get a good cleaning rod, bronze brush, jag, and patches.
A good bore cleaner like bore tech eliminator(copper remover) and bore tech c4( carbon remover).
I ,myself favour the gunslick foam (available from the ex gunshed/sport ways guys) as it is none toxic , none smelly and works very well.
Neutreulise the cleaner with a gun oil or some crc long life ( do not use the usual crc5.56 ,it will ruin the bluing of your gun).
Always remove excess oil from your barrel before heading to the range.
Practice your shooting in different positions, at different distances, shooting 2 to 3 shot groups, letting your barrel cool down between groups.Try to give a clean between each range session and with in 40 to 60 rounds your barrel should stop copper fouling.and you should be getting a good feel of your rifle :-) that will also help you try some different Amos and see what your gun like to diggest best.
This is just some suggestions, every body will have its own opinion on the matter.

I went though the long process with my new Savage when I bought it, my first new centrefire too. In all the cleaning with the copper remover I never saw any of the tell tale signs that copper was present nor being removed. Would I do it again? Probably not. But it was all trigger time and it was well and truly sighted in at the end of it and I had confidence in it's and my abilities.

i never bother with breaking in any new barrels or rifles, i approach things from a scientific point of view, as no one can offer any scientific explanation as to what is happening by cleaning after each shot X amount of times, i throw it into the bullshit pile, i have also never heard or read of anyone say, "shit this rifle shoots shit, i wish i broke it in correctly"
my method, clean new barrel, sight in, clean again, done.
your time, your ammo, your rifle, your choice.

Don't know if there's a rite way and a wrong way I went threw a box of ammo doing mine I sighted it in at the same time but 1 shot clean then take another and repeat took some time but it was time learning my rifle and getting used to it don't know if it was beneficial or not but I love my rifle it's no cannon and it's nothing flash but it does what I need it to and am happy with it
With all of the new rifles I have had the barrel has had a damn good clean before firing it for the first time and just clean the barrel after sighting in. You may want to take that savage axis to a gunsmith at some stage for a trigger job to take the half ton of pull needed to squeeze off a round out of it.
I've just gone and got myself one of those chai-frappe-latte-snobby rifles everyone seems to get these days (7mm08 for the ill-informed). (But at least it's not a Tikka) :)
The amount of grease in the new rifle is amazing. After giving the bolt a good degrease and then oil, I've been working on getting the barrel clean.
It has taken a shite load to get the barrel clean.
People wonder why you have to clean a new rifle, until they clean one.
Next job is to sight it in. Will do it the long method and give the barrel a clean between shots. Even if it is only to make me feel good.
Jumping on the bandwagon late here but WHAT??! That's a bloody fantastic rifle mate, don't let anyone tell you any different. You'll have it for a long time and shoot a lot of cool shit with it mate.Quote:

Different folks - different breakin methods. The easy way has been described by others above ... do look at your instruction manual.
I like to shoot as much as I can so I shoot a series of single shots with low cost (production) ammo, each shot followed by a good clean, then a series of five-shot groups, each followed by a thorough cleaning. For a centerfire rifle - I like to put 50 rounds minimum through it before taking it into the field. The accuracy (and your confidence) definately improves as the microscopic imperfections from manufacturing smooth out.
I'm not a hand loader and hunt with Norma ammo - so once I start to feel like the bore is settling down - I then sight it in again with my favourite Norma ammo.
The other reason I like to shoot a new rifle lots before taking it into the field is to become familiar with the controls as none of my rifles are the same in operation (excluding my Sauers) i.e. different bolt actions, safetey's, mag releases, etc.

Just came across an interesting article that may be of interest ... some yank was saying that ... if you shoot a magnum rifle, or a rifle of any calibre with a lightweight barrel, you are going to have problems with overheating. Fire no more than three shots at a time, and let the barrel cool to where it is no hotter than tepid (it's way too hot if you can't hold on to it and count to 10) before you continue.
not saying the barrel break in procedure is a myth but just remember your rifle is made to serve you not the other way round, just use the thing don't become a slave to myths on the internet i choose to think they are myths doesn't necessarily mean they are.... but i got more important things to worry about in life then if my barrel going to wear out 10% faster coz i gave a shit, just shoot the bastard that's what its for its a tool it works for you!
