Well, to be clear I have practically the same rifle with a acog not a elcan but I do have the elcan waiting on a 20" upper lol
But I do want a bigger pill at more speed than a ar15 platform can do and my ar10 is way to heavy for what I have in mind-and that's before I get started on all the shot to snag in heavy bush.
Yea I'm a AR fan boy but this is not me trying to justify yet another AR
Hahaha FYM was wondering how long before someone mentioned a T3
Kimbers are'nt bad, apart from their high bolt lift good safty though, I like my Weatherby ultra light but it ain't short & can't be cut so that rules it out
I know a guy who has a kimber Montana 300wsm that has been shortened to 16 inches with a rebated stock to fit the suppressor very light great Bush gun and shoots sub moa
It's probably a good thing I found out via email otherwise words along that vain would have been very likely to be said.
To give the guy credit, he offered to pay for it strait away and is selling his only boy toy to do so.
I took the risk of him doing something stupid when I lent it to him, perhaps I should have lent him something cheeper as I feel a little guilty at the $ he is now spending-not easy for him with with two small kids,a mortgage and a stay at home wife in a teachers income
The kimbers seem to be getting a lot of love, and would let me come in under budget-I'll probably go down that road in 308 with a odi can and a z6i 1-6 scope.
Could someone with a 308 kimber please measure the barrel diameter at legal length?
+1
I don't see the point in this cut it in half trend.
I re barreled from 22 inch to 26 on my hunting rifle and hunt more bush than open country, makes no difference at all other than it balances better in the hand.
I walk threw stuff with my rifle pointed forward so really makes no difference how long or short it is.

Had a Kimber .260 shot great only thing I hated was the safety very hard to get off in a hurry when a deer is looking at you rifle was great to carry
Just a quick question why not insurance claim? On this buggered. Rifle did that on one of mine when I broke the stock no problem from insurance company to pay out
After spending the weekend away and thinking about a bush gun after dragging a long barrel 7 Rem mag I think my next project will definitely be a bolt action in 300 blackout - 16 inch barrel plus suppressor. Sounds like a good little project in 1:7 twist and light barrel for either 110/125 grain supers or 225 subs.
Have recently spent time shooting some Forbes Rifles, the 308 shortened down to 16 inches would likely only weigh 4 1/4 pounds and it would still be useable out to 500 plus.
Don't mean to hijack your thread res but what is so special about these Forbes rifles? Aren't they just another 700 clone with a light barrel and stock? Or am I missing something? I remember seeing one of the ULA rifles about 20 years ago and I think they were built on a factory 700 action.
To answer a few in one post
1-6 scope, because I have one on my 300blk ar15 and love it to bits so if I buy one of the newer ones and it does not stay on the new bush rifle it would become a upgrade for one of my other rifles. I could not give a toss about resale value.
for the rifle,I like them short as I often get to places on mtb so short wins both on my back and on handle bar clamps.
Once again I don't care about resale value-would rather have what I want.
The forbs is just a remington copy but it's cheeper than building such a rifle up yourself from a Remington. I need to have a catch up with herbmister anyway so I'll pick his brain on it as well as doc Watson. I'm still inclined to go with a second hand as new Montana just for the sake of the budget-would rather sink the toy fund into collector rifles right now.
As to the smart call about insurance, my insurance won't cover it due to a oversite in how I sorted my cover and the less said online about his insurance the better.
I'm hoping that I'll be able to use a odi can on this and other rifles.
If you consider re-sale value dont even bother buying it cause you cant want it that much if you havent got it and are thinking of selling.
Yes its light but they actually have a reasonably decent barrel diameter and they do come standard with a 21 inch barrel. The weight savings are all in the stock and action. Hey it's all about what you want. The Forbes is most definitely not a Remington clone, the action is much smaller and lighter and no parts interchange. Forbes stopped lightening other peoples actions and designed his own so he could leave weight in the barrel where is needs to be, the stocks are pretty light as well.
If you want to go short the bigger the bore the better! My .338Fed is 14.5" 45gn of 2206H and pushes a 200gn BT at 2500. I really really love it. Kills emphatically. Shit just dies of fright:thumbsup: Couldnt recommend the caliber enough. Mines a factory T3 but with your budget you can make it out of anything you like.
Mines got a neat little weaver baby slam 1.5-5x30 on it which is just perfect. On 1.5 power you can see the can in you sight picture just like the old school shoot em up games like Doom.
Its a caliber I will always have in my safe.
338 is available but not every store will have it. A question re barrel length one I ask all short barreled rifle owners. How short does it have to be? This an entirely different question to how short do you want it to be? With the craze to have short rifles I always ask is it something needed or just something wanted?
Well my bike handlebars are 800 wide so in a ideal world I would like the finished rifle including can to be under that, the blr wasn't so I sometimes had to take the can off on some tracks.
Sounds like you need a folding/collapsible stock. It will give you more options with barrel length.
Yea, but then overall length folded comes into play while folded unless it's e cat(and even that's debatable as you know) and one of the points of having it in the handlebar clamps if fast action-the bike lets you sneak up on deer very well. The blr was good for this as I could have a round in the chamber and just pull the hammer back-working a bolt is going to be slower.
As I said, less than 800 in a ideal work but I don't see that happening realistically but as close to that as posable-the blr was 970 with the gunworks can so going to a odl can already saves about 50 or so
If you want really short you could go break open single shot. Probably wont eat much of your budget though.
Hmmm
I did think about single shot, one of the older-lighter tc's would be nice and would probably be faster to get ready from safe than a bolt gun,I do like extra rounds right there tho.
To be honest I did not think of the vx6, I have a first gen z6i on another rifle and like it so much I just jumped strait to it.
If Leopold do anything like the circle dot reticule that the z6 can have I could be interested,ESP as after a long talk with Herbmister spending the extra on a forbs could be worth it. He is s very sceptical and low key guy to those who don't know him and to say he was singing the praises of the forbs over the Montana would be a understatement.
I'm glad I'm not in a rush, and I thank everybody for there input and hope it continues
Thanks 10-Ring, that second one looks very interesting. Going to spend some time finding and reading reviews ESP if I can find some that compare the glass to the z5/z6 series as I have a couple of the z's and find that I can see everything so clearly compared to other scopes I have owned-not that I have owned a Leopold over a vx3 so probably not comparing apples with apples
Res, I've owned both Z6 and VX6 and couldn't tell much difference. The VX6 is quite a step up from the VX3 optically and the Leupold Fire Dot system is superior IMHO to any other illumination system I've seen including Leica.
Just to update this thread, if anyone is interested.
I have ended up buying a second hand tc contender in .308 with a older gunworks can and a Leopold ultralight 2-7 scope from a forum member.
At some point I'll get it recited and cut down, fit a new can and scope but it can wait as it looks like for the next few years I won't be back in nz as much as expected.
To prove I'm a slow learner it's going to live with the guy who fucked up the blr.
50% a storage thing and 50% the fact he fucked up but did what it took to make it right and I respect that.
I have seen many reasons on why's and wherefores' of what length a rifle would or should be...this is the first time I have ever come across one where it was measured against the width of the handlebars of a push bike. :)
Horses for courses so to speak.
If the law allowed I would just use a large revolver for most of the hunting I plan to use this for.
I like that, like the blr its replacing I'll be able to carry it loaded but with the hammer down.
What calibre was the original BLR?
