Thread: Ideas/places to get wood for stock

Hi all. I’m trying to find a few off cuts or vendor who might sell some hard wood for a stock I want to hand carve/create. For a BP rifle.

Any ideas or bits lying around?

What about arborists? They're often taking out ornamental trees; especially cherries etc. They use cherry would for BP guns don't they? They may be doing limbs big enough for a stock or even entire trees? I don't know the different types of wood that's used but I'm sure they're taking out limbs from oaks, walnuts etc. Mind you; wood turners may have already done a ring around; but worth a crack.

Orchardists removing fruit trees maybe another avenue? Or.... How about just asking on FB free/giveaway or buy sell pages? There maybe cockies with downed trees etc. Just a few thoughts

The big issues with getting it "wet" are you're in for at least three years drying before you can think of using it, and even then, there's a bit of luck as to whether it's gonna be suitable.

There actually maybe cockies/handymen with dried stuff in their sheds too come to think of it. It's amazing what you can score through FB

Where are you located? I have just come into a surplus... (thread to follow one day) totara railway sleepers, old matai railway beam, few bits of rimu wharf timber..... would be very roughly cut and very dry / "heat treated"

Would be able to deliver to lower south island in may.... firewood if no takers before then

Acacia is another one to look out for. I made a stock out of some I cut from a tree. Cut into a rough blank then left by fire for the winter. Never cracked and hasn't moved at all since.

Some areas of new zealand are still replacing wooden powepoles.... lot of stocks in one of those

Australian blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) is a common timber tree now; maybe suitable?

Would that be Keneally timber? There is a small sawmill just on the Chch side of Oxford that has good hardwood too.

BBS timbers in Christchurch have a huge variety of exotic timber. They would sell you a short piece or put you in contact with a joiner who may have recently bought heaps and willing to except a bit of cash for some offcuts.

In one of my previous lives I dealt with most of the hardwood suppliers from time to time Rosenfelds were by far the more expensive
