Importing Antique Rifle

My dad has an 1873 Springfield Trapdoor 45/70 that has been through a few generations of family. He's still in the US and getting up there in the years and looking to downsize his collection. Anyone been through the process of trying to import something like that? Appreciate it can be a pain but there is a bit of sentimental value there. Alternatively, could I bring it back on my next visit? I imported some rifles about 10 years ago and it was easy, unsure how that would go in the current environment...

Looks like the Model 1884 with the buffington rear sight. Looks to be in good condition. I have no idea of the process but I suspect if you still have merican citizenship it could help with the export considerably

You don't need an export permit for it stateside
You do need a import permit for NZ
Bring it back with you next time you are over there,expect delays if your flying out of LAX so get there early.

You could get it sent USPS since it's not classed as a firearm in the states,but you will still need an import permit and then collect it from Auckland.

Apply for an import permit and bring it back with you after your next trip. It`s original so not considered a firearm in the U.S but still considered a firearm in NZ. As it takes a cartridge it`s not considered antique in NZ.
If you send it freight you will have issues at the border with NZ post and couriers not wanting to touch it even though freight paid to door. Customs should be straight forward.
