Thread: Importing dies etc

Gday team, I want to get a few things from overseas that I cant get here in NZ, I want to get a Lee quick trim die for my 260 Rem and also one for 7mm Rem Mag, I use the quick trim to trim my 270 cases and really like trimming on the press. Will I run into problems bringing these in? They are cheap as chips so I cant see any problems with paying import tax but maybe customs will frown on them as being firearms related?
Also any reccomendations for good companies to buy off online would be appreciated. Cheers.

I have just ordered some dies from Natchez Shooting Supplies. They aren't a restricted item from the states so shouldn't be a problem importing in to NZ.

I imported some lees gear through titan reloading, got them sent through youshop.
Youshop pulled them up saying they were rifle parts but after a phone call and an email stating what the package was, and it was "specialised tools" not rifle parts got them cleared.

Why f**k around with Youshop, they aren't restricted items, just find a vendor who sends to NZ like Brownells/Sinclairs.com

Yep freight can be high Natchez just charged me US$54 for freight for a set of dies. I might have tried to go youshop but I had ordered a set of dies off eBay and after a month they still and not shipped (got my money back) so I just was happy I could get some. Guncity was th only one in NZ with dies in this calibre and they wanted $320 for them. Even with shipping mine will still be under $200.

Ill try find the receipt, but pretty sure it cost me about $20-25 for a set of dies shipped through youshop. All up was just shy of $100 for the dies and shipping.

It cost me US$15 for freight for one set of dies.
Worked out at about $76 NZ landed for a RCBS 2 die set.
They aren't that bad and they shipped within 2 days of order.
I think I will have to order some more soon when I get my 375 H&H

2 days ago Sinclairs quoted me US$25 for one die to NZ, nothing else, just the die on its lonesome.
Exchange rate still crap.
Have gone with Julian @ Workshop Inno who will supply NZ$3.50 cheaper than Sinclairs' landed price.
But having said that I have just bought 2 sets of dies off CH4D for odd ball calibres that you cannot get dies for here in NZ.
Each deal needs to be evaluated at the time - overseas versus local taking into account xchange rate, delivery time from US (getting bad right now), local availability etc etc. If there is only a few bucks in it I would go local.

Some of the simpler die sets will come in close if buying local. Where buying overseas makes sense is the more sophisticated die sets like Redding Comp dies where the savings are considerable as long at keeping clear of gst.

I got the dies from Brownells cause no one in NZ had 30/40 krag dies. Normally I would get from here, but as you say, CH4D has just over 2500 different dies on their catalogue, so they are good to get the odd ball stuff. And they will even make dies to suit your rifle chamber if they don't have them in stock or if they don't exist.

Fair enough - these strange people who shoot strange cartridges ha ha.
Incidentally, CH4D was superb to deal off. He (Dave) answered all my questions at what I worked out to be 1am his time. Apparently he goes in late and always works thru to the wee small hours.

I haven't spoken to CH4D before, I just know they are the go to people for odd ball cartridges.

I try and buy stuff locally but when they don't have it, we are left with little choice. And im not going to pay for the mark up on someone else importing them for me.
