I did head shoot two German Hares (Hase) with the 180's and they were anchored.

well looks like this has been done to death over 8 pages and I only found it tonight.?
Sounds like a job for a short action, anything in the 308 family from 243 to 308 would be fine.
Grab a Hardy carbon barrel and a carbon stock.
Given how light it could be I would be looking at 243, 260, 7m08, (not the CM ones) with custom barrels for the heavy bullets and all will give you over 1000 ftlb energy at 500mtr.
No suppessor so I would not go too short 22" min.
    And a 2-9, 2-10, 3-12 scope but probably stay 1" tube and a small objective 36-45mm.

    Few questions?
Why not CM? They work better in most short Actions and definitely better than 243.
Why a carbon barrel they weigh more than most light sporter contour barrels and are mainly suited for lighter weight long range rigs that want bull barrels.
Carbons stock makes sense but pick a lightweight action to start.
Agree to no suppressor if anything a brake.

You've just described what you get with a Kimber Montana or on a budget a hunter and remove the gel. Except the kimbers lighter and costs less even without the carbon barrel cost included. Accuracy guaranteed.
I have 2 a 6.5 creedmoor mountain ascent that lives in Montana that has a 22 inch barrel and brake scoped with vx3i weighs 2.7kgs. The kimber hunter I have in NZ is 2.75kgs with vx3i in 7mm08 with 22inch barrel. Both shoot sub moa. The 6.5 with factory precision hunter shoots half inch. And the 7mm shoots an inch with Winchester silver tips or a half inch with 162 eld m reloads.

Yea the comment about no CM got me lost. Shoots the same pills as a 260 lol. The last thing I would want on a do everything rifle is a muzzle brake too. I remember watching an episode of the RSTHC last year and they had a long barrelled rifle with muzzle brake on the end for bush stalking Sika. I was like WTF are they thinking.

Sort of like a few weeks back when they were shooting fallow with .30cal magnums and then also ended up in the bush stalking them with range style rifles!

I think for even a do all rifle a suppressor isnt a bad thing, a dpt weighs under 300grams, chucked on the end of a kimber etc mentioned above you have a 3kilo scoped rig. Can then save your ears for the small weight saving, with a short action, slim sporter barrel be achievable easily

+1 for the no muzzle brake on a do everything rifle, surprising how loud they are when taking a quick shot with no time to get the plugs in - never again. Suppressor or nothing

If it were me i'd buy a Kimber Montana in 7mm08, choose your bullet, pretty much anything 140gr to 162gr. Job done!

That 308 wasn't what I wanted to use long term, I'm allowed to be fussy, it's part of my passion for hunting

Exactly. Also my I don't want to have to remove the muzzle brake on my 7mm mag when bush stalking or scrub hunting. Very easily missed opportunity. The zero would be different too.

Just sell the lot and buy another carbon light in .269 or Creedmoor and I would still run a can it so much nicer on the ears

Sorry. Wasn't getting at you, more seeing the irony in someone else seeing what you just sold as the ideal one gun set up. Everyone is different with different ideals.
It does make me wonder though, seeing the number and variety of fine rifles you have owned if you will ever find "the one".

No worries mate. I can definitely see the irony, that 308 would have done the job for sure.

Haha, yeah that's a good point. We're extremely spoilt for choice!
