I got one of these sitting on my desk at the moment

Bird Gard Laser Gun | Bird Gard Pty. Ltd.

Scares the crap out of birds.

We use it to chase them out of our warehouses.

When I was training the Girls at work I would tell them if you get the laser square onto the bird there would be a small puff of smoke and maybe a feather or two would float down.
Some wouldn't use it because they didn't want to hurt the birds.
I just reassured them that the birds felt nothing as it was a very quick painless death

It has an operational range of several kilometres and is specifically banned from use within 10kms if an airport.
And warnings that it will burn out your retina.

Notice the design of the grip.

    Anyone ever seen that before?

    Cheers
    Pete

Then I suggest you punish the people doing that, not the 1000s of people using them safely and legally.

The new rules wont effect those toy lasers Hunter.
I have a green one that I use for SAR training and it puts a strong dot on cliffs about 2 km away. I would hate to think what damage it could do if used incorrectly.

As 99% of those toys are 5 mw it actually does. Our new limit is 1 mw. The standard laser diode in 5mw. It's just another case where we blindly follow Australia.

So I wonder how you go about importing them for "legitimate" use and who gets to decide what a legitimate use is?

"You do NOT need to submit an application if:
    ...
    * The device you wish to import, supply, or acquire does not come within the definition of a “high-power laser pointer” (for example, laser devices used in surveying or construction, devices used for measuring distance, devices supplied with fixtures for mounting on a rifle as a sighting aid, or devices intended for use as rescue flares).
    ..."

If any of you actually care, and aren't just making noise for the sake of it -
