Leupold scope mount rings, a wee problem

Shout out to M77 folk. I acquired a pair of 30mm Leupold M77 rings a couple of years ago. Only just now got around to properly checking them out.
They look the part and sit nicely, unfortunately the clamping mechanism just will not tighten sufficiently. Had a good look and there's a good mil, even two, of slop.
The adjusting clamp sits tight against the body of the scope ring but not tight against the receiver top.

So, I had a google on Leopold's website. Lo and behold, at least one negative review citing the very same issue.

Any one on the forum experienced similar, if so, how did you rectify it? Bearing in mind I got these second hand.

Asking before I let yours truly loose with the appropriate file.

    Cheers

@garyp. I really appreciate offer, thanks. Not sure if that would solve the problem though. The clamp sits tight against the base of the ring and is very loose on the receiver top. It won't tighten any further.
To my uneducated eye it seems that base of the scope ring is oversize. Does that make sense?
