Hi folks, is anyone using/used this offering from Leupold?
I'm thinking about a scope upgrade for some medium range hunting- out to around 500m.
Looks like a nice easy to dial lightweight scope...any comments, good or bad?
Cheers

I have an older vx3 4.5-14*40 with adj obj and b&c reticle. Love it. Be aware though that the true mag at low end is more like 5x. It is more an open country scope than bush scope. If you hunt bush yr better off with 2.5-8*36 or 3-9
It would be quite ok, but spend a couple hundy more and buy the VX5 3-15 in the for sale section - you won't(shouldn't) look back.
Cheers
Thanks for the comments fellas...this will be going on my "open country" rifle, my bush rifle has a vx1 2-7 on it.
Yeah I saw that vx5, Im kinda constrained to something very close to $1k, im also keen on FFP rather than SFP.
Cheers
The vx3 won't be ffp
They are nice and light but limited in the eyebox for eye relief, the vx-5 vx-6 vxr bigger eye box is really forgiving in comparison
The vx5 mentioned is a big step in quality above and if you can get the zl2 turret it is far superior to the standard CdS type dial as well
Vx3s are sort of the no frills but still solid lightweight option priced just under where the Leupold scopes get really nice
Buying well second hand if you look after it well means resale will be damn near what you paid when it comes to leupolds
Save you pennies a VX5 is leaps ahead of the vx3.
I really hate the vx3 4.5 x 14 or what ever it is the eye relief is really crap

Hmmm OK looks like I've been talked out of that one...I will monitor buy and sell zone here for a while. Cheers
@AP13 I love my vx3 4x14 boone and crocket been a good scope but like said its not a bush scope. Been a very good scope over 10 plus years old and a mate has the same and rates his
Eye relief is as good or better than most. Just dont try snap shots on full magnification and youll be fine.
I think I need to check one of these out in a shop, keeping in mind all the comments on here...not that it matters, but I'm wanting SFP scope not FFP scope like I said earlier...got me wires crossed...
Love my vx3 4.5-14 dont be deterred. Used it out to 500 yards so far
Vx3 . 4.5-14 *40 is second focal plane. IIRCthe eye relief is 95+ mm which is better than several high end scope brands.
got same scope WOODY and agree 100% about bottom end....I find on 14power its light gathering is limited too...pretty good if down to 9 in the gloom of last light...
nice scope all the same and for open stuff its primo.
This scope has been discussed in several other threads the last month or two so do a search.
I wonder if someone is trying to generate chatter or opportunities to post negative comments.
Its a lot lighter than the VX5.
Ok will do a search and see what comes up...cheers
I fondled one of these today...nice n light! It wasn't mounted to a rifle, but I can see what some were saying re eye relief etc. I'm a big fan of the CDS dial setup though. Going to the VX5 also means new rings being a 30mm tube. I will keep an eye out for secondhand VX3 or VX5, otherwise probably go new VX3 if nothing suitable pops up. Cheers for the feedback
I've got one on my .308 bush pig, I rate it. If you can get a VX5 on sale, you can get a VX3i on sale!
I've shot animals out to 450 yards with it and one turn of dial gives me 800 yards and that is more than enough for a 130g projectile. I rate them so much I just purchased a VX3 4.5-14 for a new build I'm doing, a ,284 Superpig.
For me the weight and $$$ saving over a VX5 wins on the day. The VX5 only has 15 power magnification, the extra $$$ doesn't make it worth it for me, unless you want to dial further...
Yeah i'm really liking their compact size and light weight....nothing comes close as far as I can see online...
Craigc- how does it perform at close range in the bush, say 0-40m? Also, have you got a custom dial for a specific ammo, or just using the standard MOA dial they come with?
cheers
I got one a little while a go as the shop that cannot be named were selling them crazy cheap for some reason. Agree with the comments about eye relief, but it replaced a VX-1, so upgrade in terms of features. Also agree with the magnification at the lower end being too much for bush hunting.
I have one with the Boone and Crockett reticle and I like it for a hunting rifle. Mine didn't actually come with the CDS - I sent mine to Aussie to be upgraded to the newer dial system and do have it now with standard MOA markings, the zero lock is nice to have. Having the B&C reticle is also handy as I have the MOA measurements at 2 different mag ranges as well.
VX3 is light and compact, glass coatings are pretty good in cold wet etc, holds zero, eye relief isn't super forgiving but you get use to it pretty quick. I doubt I would need more scope than that for the hunting I do which is mostly bush and trying to get to some slips / tops but nothing like the south island lads get.
