On balance, Ballistol seems to get the vote, so will go down that route. I'll use up my can of Corrosion X first though. It's good at preventing rust and won't damage non-metal components. Thanks all.

interesting one leather have quite some experience with leather - when I was shepherding we used an old fashioned oil based on I think linseed oil called neatsfoot oil for our saddles and bridles- terrible stuff used to stain ones trousers - then as a biker always full leathers and what to use - well a lot of beeswax products out there - bloody useless - in cold conditions it come off in lumps - eventually I got onto a genuine german saddle oil effax comes in brown or black brilliant stuff soaks in wont come off the very very best - I even use it on my good R .M Williams boots and they polish up with itQuote:

yes it worked okay neatsfoot but stained everything- remember the horse sports day at Whatatutu out of Gisborne - wanted a pair of trou to jump in - borrowed my sisters white jeans - well when I took them back she could not get the brown stains out from my saddle - very pissed off
Here's a fairly comprehensive test- If you can be bothered reading it. A few surprises here. I don't think it touches on performance of the products when handled though, slipping in and out of bags etc, which may be a factor, but pretty hard to test properly.

Interesting, have never had anything rust with the ballistol.
I like Rem oil, its got harder to find recently and the price has got a bit silly!
