For versatility the 223 has the edge on the 204 only because of the heavier weights, though barrel twist can have an impact on accuracy with differing weights. A slower twist like 12 or 14 to 1 should stabilise lighter (faster) projectiles better but may not stabilise heavier ones like a 69gr etc. A faster twist like 1-7 or 1-9 may not be good enough with the lighter pills. For varminting the 204 is still my choice, 4200fps to 4400 fps (
Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Ammunition :: Rifle :: Choose by Caliber :: 204 Ruger :: 204 Ruger 24 gr NTX® Superformance) factory so if you are 1" high at 100 you have a peak at 150 of 1.2 inches and zero at 230m and 1 inch drop out at 280. That is a 2"circle hit with a zero hold over out to nearly 300 metres.
In saying that, the ultra lite and ultra fast 204 is probably not suited to game goat sized or bigger. With shot placement it could be done but there is far too much room for error so a bit more weight would be needed for that. So if shooting bunnies, hares and wild cats out to 300 and beyond then my choice is 204. But each to their own.
