Had a call from firearms registry fulla yesterday. Apparently a machine gun belt (Metal,cloth or strip) is considered a prohibited magazine. You need a permit.
I cannot find this in black or white or defined in the arms act.
It is my view that it is not required and if deemed so they need to issue a notice to the public as many many folk posses them.
What are your thoughts?

How ridiculous but I await someone to support or deny that.
By definition it's not a magazine - but that does mean that virtually every Cadets unit now needs to replace at least one cadet's trophy and every aviation museum is now holding prohibited items along with another hurdle for every RSA etc etc. Just thinking about that in my head, the numbers of places that have those and the numbers of people that have a length of linked dummy 5.56 or 7.62 is absolutely huge. The amount of data needed to be added to the registry, or people paid out and made to surrender their decorations - not actually sure how that will work as to the best of my knowledge linked/dummy belts were getting sold off out of the army surplus type shops as 'no licence reqd'...
With the recent and past data breaches Id be wary. It could be anyone doing a bit of fishing. Id be wanting to see someone in person about it, not at your place

Oh my lord. If a belt of linked .762 constituted a prohibited magazine, would that mean that there would need to be a unique identifier / serial number on every link?

A friend has an email from rego team that stripper clips for a M1 Garand ( 8 rounds ) are not a prohibited magazine.
But cloth belts are ?

Using the FSA logic (?), it's probably because a belt can hold more than 10 rounds, whereas a Garand en bloc clip holds 8. When will this madness end?Quote:

It stores bullets to be fed into the action automatically, same function/outcome entirely as a box mag just a different style.

Just because they said something doesn’t make it so. They are making shit up as they go along and should be ignored. If you keep jumping every time they say jump you are setting precedents and they will continue the practice. Having had firsthand experience with this, your very first go to, as suggested previously on other posts is to record the time, date, and name of the caller and then politely but firmly request clarification in writing of said policy and and its reference to the relevant part of the Firearms Act and request any further communication to be in writing only.
They cannot be trusted, not matter how amicable they may seem, so just cover your ass when dealing with them. Any solicitor will tell you this.
because when you remove the brass cases it becomes just a jigsaw of funky shaped bits of pressed metal..I think its more a case of they were so commonly about the show that to now require them to be permitted is just bizzare AND without a M60 etc to use it in...its never in a million years going to be harmful or dangerousQuote:

Is a disintergrating link belt a magazine ? When it doesnt contain cartridges it is simply a pile of individual links
Back when the Prohibited Magazine crap became law the Police clarified that MG belts were not 'magazines' and were exempt.
This is a juicy one. The Arms Act doesn't define what a magazine is. It does define what a prohibited magazine is (Section 2B) but this is on the basis of certain characteristics of the magazine without defining what is considered a magazine.
It does recognise the existence of magazine adapters, magazine couplers, and magazine loaders and defines them as parts.
Without legal definition it's up to interpretation really.

I was assured by Arms Office that links and belts are not "part of a Machine Gun" when I tried to hand in nearly 500 links and 25 belts also AK47 mag loader and clips. I still have the clips if anyone wants them.

It's not a magazine though by any definition you want to park on it. It's like saying a .50cal green ammo box that everyone has started using to lock their ammo and bolts in for travelling is a magazine because it contains the belt. We used to get .22LR 'mag loaders' (one brand was a 'shell shucker', can't remember the name of the other) that allowed you to quickly reload. By that definition they are a magazine's magazine! Same with 12guage speedloaders, the 5-round tubes that allow you to shove 5 12guage rounds into a tube mag. Next step is a tennis ball with a slit in it being an unregistered ammo storage device...Quote:

The main problem with this is the fact that disintegrating link belts are everywhere because they've been sold as 'inert-no license required' since forever. Ok all, hopefully this bit of information is good for future reference. As per email received in screenshot below. A machine gun belt is not a magazine. Which we all knew. It was just those responsible for regulating that had a brain fart.
