$500-odd was for me about 6 or 7 weeks wages back then (semi skilled type work)
A young guy today could buy a new mannlicher in say 4 weeks?
Just making the point that when calculated in “hours labour” many of our modern toys, tools and necessities are significantly cheaper to purchase than 40 years ago.
There are exceptions eg milk at 4c/pint!
About 1/2 what I paid for my first computer a year, maybe two, later.Quote:

Yeah its interesting when you look at the prices they were fairly expensive but I guess you didn't have to fork out for a GPS , Locator Beacon , range finder binos , spotting scope , Fancy lightweight tent etc etc .

I shot my first stag with the Steyr pro with synthetic stock in 270. A mean green machine :-)
I can remember a guy buying a Mannlicher back in about 1980/81-ish; he paid $3000 for it. I was earning about $80 a week as an apprentice back then. I bought a new Ruger M77 .270 at about the same time and it cost me $434.... I can remember because my mum hit the roof...... Bought it from Sutherlands in NP. Put a deposit down on it; took it home and drove to NP every friday night to pay my regular payments on it!
paid $450.00 for my model L in 1979 with a vari-x 2 2-7 x 33 on it, looks like I got a good deal, it's still in the safe.
I paid $365 for a Tikka M55 in 1979. Paid $960 for a Sako AII in 1983.Quote:

At that time all .308 rifles were subsidised (or had the import tax removed) by the government and a new Sako .308 was around $190 from memory. Supposedly if we were invaded the government could seize the .308's for military use.
I bought a secondhand Winchester Featherweight in 1982 for from memory $600-660.
This was when shepherding and my income before tax was about $8500 a year.
Good rifles nowadays are relatively cheap.
Just everything else like petrol and houses aren't.
I like seeing those old magazines... by any chance is there some old adverts for sakos?

I brought a Winchester featherweight in 1986 for about $900 the Sako were quite a bit more I wish I had brought the Sako also
