    MOA outta whack

    Hey guys

I've put a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP scope on my rifle and have used it a couple of times. First was at 500 yards and second was 300 metres, both times started with a 100 yard zero.

The issue is that after coming back from the 100 yard sighting and going up X amount of clicks for the distance and only 1 moa right to counter wind, my rounds on both occasions ended up way high and way to the right. I end up chasing it down and left to centre easily with no problem, but it's a real pain in the ass that I can't just go up X clicks to be on target... what's going on? I understand that the hight could be me possibly adjusting too much, but there's no way that 4 clicks is going to throw it out to the first ring against the wind at 300 yards (wind was pretty heavy too)

    Any ideas?

    P.S target was a 300 metre F-TR class

take it to the 100 yard range on a calmish day

make sure your 100yd zero is spot on. then shoot a box - 5 moa right, up, left, down. if it is tracking correctly you should end up at the start point.

next tape some a4 pages together to create a "tall" target. put a dot on the bottom, shoot at it, then dial up 20 moa and shoot at the dot again, and use a good measureing tape to measure the actual distance. this might also tell you if your scope is mounted at an angle.

make sure you are shooting at EXACTLY 100yards, and shoot off a solid rest to eliminate shooter issues...

let us know the results and we can start trying to figure out what is going on.

My guess is some cant with the info so far.
But do as ebf says and it will quickly be evident if it's an internal scope problem.

or it could be a combination of pulling the trigger as you fire and a poor rear rest

There's a nicely enclosed 100 yard range near here so I'll give the box a try.
I'd hate to have to go through the process of getting a replacement on such a supposedly top tier scope.

delay judgement until you've done some fundamental tests

i've seen nightforce scopes that shat themselves, anything can break or have a manufacturing fault. having said that, 99.9% of issues are shooter related and have nothing to do with the equipment, haha.

We'll I was using Australian outback ammo which is supposed to be the most consistent with temperatures and are pressure etc. Factory is factory though I guess.

I'll be trying some Norma ammo the local club uses and see if it's more consistent.

Yup, check all the above, plus your rings. I once got asked by a very experienced shooter to test a NF scope...we couldn't get it to shoot, so I made a cock of myself and blamed the scope. Long story short, it was the rings not the rifle or the scope that were at fault.
