My NZL rifle...
Hey folks,
after my wonderful trip to that splendid country of yours in February and March, work completely drowned me as soon as I came back to Germany…
But I made good use of the time in between and wanted to re-enter the forum now...
With a build that I never would have done if it was not for the hunting in NZL!
One part of it was hunting on a farm on the South Island and one of the rifles was an old Ruger in .223 Remington with a shortened barrel and can.
I loved running around the hills with that wieldy thing, go for Wallabies and other critters.
When I got back to Germany, I instantly rang my gunsmith and told him what I wanted…
And here it is now!

Tikka T3x Lite in 223. Remington with a 1:8 twist.
Barrel shortened to 16.5“ including a new muzzle thread.
Worked over trigger, trued bolt lugs and lapped barrel.
A-Tec H2 with one module on top of it.
Zeiss V6 2-12x50 ASV with a complete Recknagel mounting system.
Oversized bolt handle (from GunCity! 😊 ) and a trusty Harris bipod.
With the scope mounted and can attached I am at 3.6 kg and 99 cm overall length.
What a handy carbine!
It shoots really great (consistent 0.6 MOA for 5 rounds) already with 69 grs GGG and 73 grs ELD-M.
Still must test the 65 grs SBT and the mighty 77 grs TMK though.
Will use it from everything legal here up to roe deer.
And I guess also a lot of shooting at the range as it just too much fun with that thing!
And besides the Tahr trophy in my living room, this little Tikka will always take me back to the Rangitata and the Hunters Hills… 😊
It is my equipment "take away" from New Zealand.
I guess I could have done much worse... 😉
Cheers
Ben

Cool, is there many people over in Germany who have a rifle like that? Eg shortened and suppressed?
Ya might start a new trend

How's the noise level with the Atec & 1 module?

well are we not all different thats a handy little rig but if I came to Germany its those beautifull single shot rifles German Gunsmiths excel at that would interest me - and the lager and those roasted pork knuckles man they look good

Good choice! I run a 20" Tikka CTR, 10 shot mag, suppressed .223, 8" twist and my 'go to' load is the 69Grain Sierra BTHP. I was using GGG 69 grain loads on the hill where I didn't pick up the brass because of the crimped primers but I have run out of that. My rig shoots like yours, 0.6 MOA consistently. I find the 69 grain load gives good kills on goats and wallabies out to 500 metres. It would be great on Roe deer. Do German hunting regulations allow you to use .223 on deer?

Hey @dvk-kp !
Well... Shorter barrels and cans became quite popular here in the last few years.
But more like 20" and for .308 or 8x57.
The high probability of wild boar crossing your ways demands such a rifle for most hunters here.
I am fortunate enough to hunt wild boar on dedicated driven hunts in winter and only in specific crops during the night.
Then I also use a Tikka Lite with 20", a can and .308 Win with a good cooper bullet.
But the nice thing is:
There are 18 huntable species in my hunting area and only one (wild boar) requires a minimum of 6.5mm and 2000 Joule @100m by law because of the weight and size.
And that is why a shorty .223 is perfect for me!
More than enough to hunt with it during daylight...
For nighttime I just switch guns.
Cheers
Ben
