Today my boss turned up with a Leupold rx-1000i expecting it to be able to measure the distance between two points ie. aim it at one point then another and measure the distance between them, it doesnt.
Is there a range finder that does?

A gps. Take it to spot A then take it to spot B and measure how far it is to spot A.
Doesnt really answer your question though. I think you can do something like measure the 2 places get the angels and work it out like that
Sounds like that RX-1000i is broken...I'll take it off him for $5 for a posh paperweight if he pays the postage, coz I'm a generous kinda guy. :-)
There are building type range finders that will do that and work out all your tryangleulation angles and lengths etc but not at farm ranges. Probably looking at surveying gear for that.

Yeah like cam said, forestry industry uses them a bit overseas.

shit like that
Bound to be a smartphone app that will do the trig for you, must be a few surveying one's around i'd imagine
As long as it has Leica on the side you are solid. What's the distances you need to measure?
Yea I figued we might be pushin it, I need to measure up to lengths of 50m anywhere from 100-600m away from my position.
Its not something I intend to go hard out on I was just wondering if there was a simple tool for the job.
You can do it with what you have but will need to use trig(maths)
Pretty sure ones like the one I linked will do that. They just use the two distances measured and the angle difference and then trigonometry to calculate the missing distance. SOHCAHTOA.
Im a hauler driver, the bush is going through a big hoo haa because we keep getting killed. one of the initiatives is getting our breaker outs(the guys that hook the logs up) further away from the ropes before the give the go ahead. Its as easy as common sense but some how the industry naturally attracts workers with a lack of said trait:wtfsmilie:
So are you measuring that the breakout guys are a set distance away before you haul up?.Thats not the only industry to attract said trait. So when we work on transpower job every subbie has a dedicated safty observer to make sure we observe our mads( minimum approach distance from HV) maybe that's a avenue for the breakout crews?? Unfortunately common sense is overruled by fuck heads in offices now.
You can use a robotic total station using a laser on non-reflective targets but where talking some serious coin. I’m sure Leica will make then but unless you’re a surveyor by trade it’s not worth the investment.
No simple tool as far as I’m aware. Put tracking collars on your crew and monitor them that way lol
Yea pretty much to just check up now an then to say "yip thats far enough" or "keep climbing you &%$@ @*&^$!!!"
Risk taker widow maker
Vectronix make a bino that will do everything you need plus a bit more out to some ridiculous ranges. There are a few floating around NZ for sale. Not the cheapest things going in the world but cheap compared to a saved life. If you can't find any locally then you can import them easyish despite what some people think.
They are big and ugly as all fuck but do a very good job.
Why not put a MOA scope in the hauler ,crosshair on the haul, hashmark on the boys, thats far enough:yaeh am not durnk:
GPS shock collar with enough grunt to boot them out of the way!!
A speaker and the sound of tumbling logs.
Our Vector 21's do that , Measure distance between two distant points.
