I got a spare one of these that I had used on an air rifle some years ago, but removed it because I found it pointless being so low powered, its magnification is 4x32.
I was thinking of throwing it on a ruger 10/22 mostly for possum control.
Whats the common sort of optic typically used on .22 rifles these days?
Anything better I should use instead?
I disagree..... I'd say perfect for a 22 rifle! ;)
30 years ago, 4x32 was better than adequate on a hunting rifle, and 6x - 10x were used on sniper rifles... How our collective eyesight seems to has faded! :cool:
4 x 32 is probably the most common size .22 scope in NZ.
they were a great scope and just about perfect for your .22lr
I mean, I have an old Wilhelm 4x32 on my .270 if that helps? Admittedly a few years ago now, but last time I used it, I was able to put a good hole in a hare at 140m...
Chuck it on and have a play with it! Anything you can't see in. 4x will likely be out of effective range of a .22.
Find this funny. I always used to use 4x scopes on .22s. I've since switched to 2-7x variable scopes, mostly for the less magnification in the lower end for up close possums etc. So 4x magnification is plenty.
2-7x is almost perfect but 4x is entirely adequate for .22lrs in my opinion.
Depends how far you are shooting and target size. For 100+ metre head shot rabbits, I don't think 18x would be outrageous. For shooting possums on a tree branch above your head, 4x should be plenty!

Ive seen some ridiculously large scopes on some .22s that look way to big for the jolly thing.
I had been looking at variable scopes, but I guess there is no harm in using this for now and see how I go.
Higher magnification may be helpful when trying to shoot a possum up the top of a real tall tree, but most of them I see pretty low down alot of the time.
Excellent scope for the job. I had one many years ago and it worked on a few rifles, starting with a 303. Never failed.
Ditto. Never found myself underscoped with a Tasco 4x32 on a .303, until the reticle disappeared one day, fortunately on the range and not while hunting!
