Old BSA or SAKO help

Hi team.

Any help explaining the sako butt plate on this BSA would be greatly appreciated.

It's in pretty poor condition. Is it worth restoring and any guesses on prices?

I think it's .270 BSA imperial featherweight.

Take to it with some steel wool and inox. Strip that gungy paint off it and see what it looks like after that. Definitely worth a go.

These old tarts can be quite good shooters but . . . . Unless they have sentimental value to the owner not many people seem to want them, apart maybe the odd specialist collector, and they always want pristine examples.

There is a Hunter 222 at $200 and a Majestic (can't recall the calibre) for $250 in the local gunshop and both have been there for a while . . .

Definitely worth restoring if the barrel is OK. I have restored about a dozen old BSA rifles. I love them. I also have spare parts.

its a conundrum no the sako butt plate does not belong on a BSA and I am not sure it belongs on that stock either - what the stock is dont know - 7mmwsm gives good advice with the stock and I would take the metal out of the stock and some break free or ballistol and coarse rag and slowly work on that surface rust needs some TLC - those older BSA are not a bad action so if the barrel is okay and it shoots its a workable rifle - value maybe $400 if all cleaned up

Have got a spare BSA butt plate you can have free if you want it. I always fit small Pachmayr recoil pads.

Before you do anything , check the condition of the barrel with a borescope. It might be munted........then again it might not

The best way to check a barrel is "munted" is clean it and shoot it.
Some barrels look ptistine but shoot like shit. Others look like shit but shoot very well.

Apparently so. In my googling I saw an old ad saying it reduces recoil by 40-60%. Possibly makes the shooter 60% deafer tho?

I've taken it apart to have a good look over. After I've done a little cleaning I'll let a few rounds go.

Yep was called a Bezza, or something similar.
I have a 3006 the same. Rebarreled now but still have the original barrel.

Majestics had them from factory but no mention of stars on bolt. Also Schnabel end was an early Majestic feature but std on earlier BSA Viscounts etc. Edit to Add: Check Serial Number against this.

Its a BSA, definitely worth spending some time and money on for the right person. Apart from the paint and the butt pad, that stock looks like the original lightweight stock. The "brake" on the muzzle is the original BESA brake. I would hazard a guess that given a good clean up and oil, that the action will be as slick as. Give it a good clean, try a few rounds and see what its capable of. If it dont shoot too good, the shortening the barrel to get rid of the brake usually see's them right. I had one once, had done a lot of work, probably as rough as the one pictured. After a tidy up, and a new barrel, the 4th new barrel, it shoots lights out. And the now owner loves it, says its one of the smoothest bolt's hes ever used.

I agree with the bolt action, it is a beauty.

Yes the muzzle brake is standard on Featherweight Imperials and Majestics. My Majestic had one on the original barrel. .270 at 5 1/4 pounds would be a real kicker without it. Pretty hard on the ears as with modern brakes. No ear protection worn in those early days. Hence not much left now and constant tinnitis.
