youngs certainly smells very different now than the early stuff- smells like a diesel oil mix now -I have not used it for years - hoppes no 9 I don't notice any difference in smell and have used it for well over 50 years - great product - Rawleighs yes- mix of vaseline with eucalyptus oil or similar - and it did have written on can for man or beast - still going- not that I use it

The good old German balistol is resisting the test of time as you can still find some in the local gunshops.

The worst thing about Hoppes is the way it seemed to evaporate out of a closed container. Never seemed to last long for me.
Yip cleaning gear was top drawer ammo was second drawer plus old oil containers with the tops cut off full of .222 and .303 in the wardrobe grandfather was supplied .222 when jet boating the Whanganui River as the ranger at Pipiriki and they were allocated 5 rounds per goat he quickly learnt to cheat the system by making sure he killed them in one and pocketed the other 4 had buckets of the stuffQuote:

Hoppes #9 almost full, 303 is that tough it leaked through the glass to eat the label
until a few years back calellas and bass pro sold hoppes 9 air fresheners.
The old Young's 303 oil is the gunsmiths best friend! Every few weeks I get a nice old gun in that 'won't go'. Yep, full of Young's 303 that has set like concrete! Full strip and wash in kero, lube and reassemble - good as new. At least the old Youngs preserved things well even though it gummed up the works.
That was because it was meant to be mixed with water shaken up into a white emulsion and the water droplets would dissolve up the salts left behind by corrosive primers in the army 303 ammo.Quote:
