Oviedo Carbine Grouping High - Advice Requested

The Oviedo Spanish Carbine 308W has the standard Mauser carbine iron sight and groups consistently 5" high at 25m.

It is a really great shooter with real potential up to 150m.

The two options seem to be fitting a taller front-sight, or reprofiling the rear-sight. Optics are not an option.

I would appreciate advice on the best way to proceed and ideally a contact person who could do the work.

    What ammo are you using?
If all factory they will be set/regulated for a designated load.
haven't shot open sights for years and didn't do that much of it either so cant tell you wether to try lighter, faster loads over slower, heavier ones although
recoil has a big say in this too but that sort of relates to the load thing. I think heavier recoil makes it print higher.

Remove the front blade and have a piece of steel welded on to increase the length then file it back down to the appropriate size.
That's presuming you can't get another blade if there correct size.
Once it's all correct get it re blued and installed. You are away.
If you are going to do it your self, any competent welder should be able to help you. Just get it oversize then file it back down.

csmiffy - Have used handloads 168gr HP 42gr 8208 and 165gr SP 40gr 8208, together with assorted factory loads. S&B 150gr SPCE is the best performer for grouping and softer than most on the shoulder.

slip on recoil pad.......hold rifle firmly....yes with offside hand on forestock and try it again. your rifle should be plurry near dead on at 25 yards reguardless of sights....have you taken out bolt and done a rough bore sight??? when you do it will become obvious what Im saying. 5" is a hell of a long way to be out at 25 yards reguardless of anything else.

I have to drop my SMLE Poi down 6”.
That means 0.06 of an inch/1.5mm higher front sight.

    @Dago
Here is what I mentioned to you yesterday.

Its about 3mm higher than most fitted blades.

How old is it? The older ones used a low pressure 308 called 308 cetme.
Could be what the sights are made for.

Whats it doing at 100 - 150m? What does the lowest setting on the rear sight say?
Im not familiar with that rifle or what sights its equipped with, but many old milsurps have a minimum zero distance (battle sight zero) of 300+ meters.

Chris, the lowest setting is 400m on adjustable sight suggesting battle sight zero to be 300m. Needs work to raise front sight.

Ok yes, just wanted to confirm that physical adjustment/modification of the sights was required, as opposed to just overlooking something or not realising that that's just how it is in standard configuration. If you want to modify it from its original configuration then have at it. A blob of weld on the front sight, then gradually file it down till you have the correct POI could be an option.
