A modded rifle would put you on open class，so you would be competing against very tricked out ar's in fancy pants calibers. It's up to you if that bothers you or not, but having seen people do it and shoot very very well and not get the kudos is not my cup if it can be avoided. If you only have the one rifle to choose from then who cares,shoot first and worry latter.
