Not worth the risk, easy enough to get those things here.
The risk is a conviction at either end if found to be doing something naughty.
When they find them in your luggage they then proceed with a cavity search just to see if you may have the barrel tucked up there...also your wife and children will be cavity searched...so check with your travelling companions first and see if they feel OK about that.
Lets see conviction that stays with you the rest of your life, As you mentioned perhaps a $10`000 fine. Loss of Firearms license....
Hell yeh deffinatly worth the risk for a couple of mags and a butt... LoL
Contact your AO and get a permit, post it home with approperate paperwork and you won`t have a problem. Last lot of Hi Cap mags I sent home from the States with paperwork were sitting in the mail box when I arrived after being checked by customs, that did supprise me a little.
We really need a big bold sticky on this
On a risk factor scale of one to ten that idea comes in at a gazillion. Don't bother.
I accidently had a rifle bolt in hand carry a while ago and that was bloody anal.
Harmless but bloody anal pricks at airports.
DO IT , Coastwatch has been boring lately
Just don't do it, its not worth the risk.
Internet shop and get the appropriate permits at home.
-LGS in the US will have higher prices and less selection than Brownells
-You won't have to carry the stuff in your luggage (easier)
-You won't get screwed by accidentally taking items where they're prohibited by state law (30 round mags in your bag going to CA? could be a whoops)
-You won't get screwed by customs who may not know the law and give you trouble even with permits
For the cost of the shipping, you're better off avoiding the hassles and shopping from your keyboard.
eh thought is was worth posting - I travel through the USA around 5 times per year currently, had a crack mid 2012, with a hogue stock few spare mags and other bits, the USA team grabbed me had a winge about the mags so i gave it up, only value $700, hoping at this end it would be as simple if i declare. and would a sufficient licence suffice if second hand goods. reading further mags i can understand but the stock parts? im sure some parts should be ok?, the rules are not clear enough, what about front posts? fixed sights? rails? hand guards? how far does it go? scopes are ok, rings? muzzle breaks?
For the risk of $8 front posts, couple of handrails, troy fixed sights, magpul adjustable and fixed stocks $70 each (here nearly $400) i was curious.
Saying its as cheap here as buying in the USA is rubbish. Permit over internet thats the next step but in the mean time as i leave tomorrow i was fishing for experiences. I also understand the clowns that have tried bringing in tracking gear in the first instance surrendered the gear only.
This is a forum, we are free to express and avoiding an ass raping in prison its easier to talk with you pros than waiting in cue at the cop shop and talking to a local PO that has no idea.
i carry and suit and a small bag of clothes therefore i have space.
If you want a hand with the Paperwork side of things I would be happy to help you.. Have done it many times. Not hard. I always used Brownells.
ITAR § 123.17 Exports of firearms, ammunition,
and personal protective gear.
(a) Except as provided in § 126.1 of
this subchapter, Port Directors of U.S.
Customs and Border Protection shall
permit the export without a license of
components and parts for Category I(a)
firearms, except barrels, cylinders, receivers
(frames) or complete breech
mechanisms when the total value does
not exceed $100 wholesale in any transaction.
What's a category I(a) firearm, to save me looking it up
CATEGORY I—FIREARMS, CLOSE ASSAULT
WEAPONS AND COMBAT SHOTGUNS
* (a) Nonautomatic and semi-automatic
firearms to caliber .50 inclusive (12.7 mm).
so in short i can bring in parts not totaling more than $100 each item. so here lies my query, does a rear stock no tube of an AR15 at $70 mean i can bring it in? if no tube it should technically be ok?
No, $100 total.
You'll need an Nz import permit.
E: depends how they choose to define it at customs. You could read it as you can have as much as you want if you paid less than $100 per purchase
