I wonder about that @Rushy ... It would be a hard hard road to hoe, going against the ability of a large national chain of franchises with their combined advertising power and purchasing power ...

Yes, there would be people who do come to any alternative store in avoidance of H+F, and over time the business would grow, but like most of retailing you'd be fighting against high rent prices, internet retail and small and decreasing margins.

Dont wish to be a gloom merchant, but theres clouds on the horizon for the whole retail model at the moment ... the dynamic has changed radically over the last few years ... and will continue to change ...

    That is true.

Go into business with @Spanners and have a nzhuntingandshooting online shop as part of the forum, a seperate buy section where you can purchase projectiles, brass, powder etc directly. And when it comes time for stock to be purchased do a mass order of what people are actually waiting on so that items aren't sitting around waiting to be sold. He already has his katipo shooting supplies if thats still going so could be intergrated?

Easy in concept but maybe not in practice.

It's a shame all the great small independents are getting slowly absorbed by corporate juggernauts. Not just with the hunting/fishing/outdoors scene either. I used to spend a lot of money at Alp Sports on Hardy Street back in the day.
That HF is like a try hard Cabela's these days.
I was gifted a $100 voucher and was genuinely surprised how hard it was to find something worth putting it towards and settled on a selection of small items. It was amusing though, overhearing some of the sales pitches. I also saw a no name Chinese torch for sale @ $70 which could be had online & delivered for $7USD at the time.

His point of difference could-would probably be stocking dies-powders etc and actually knowing something about what he is selling

Purchasing power does fuck all for H&F when they are too top heavy!
They're over head costs eat away at the savings they could pass on.

kiwi39, I'm not having a go at you if that's how it reads.

I don't know how their org chart looks, but if it is too heavy then poor them, that won't work in the new world ... Not for long and not without other compromise in other areas of the business

All those with dogs waiting no longer fear death. Those with many dogs waiting even welcome it in it's time.

You are making perfect sense and something I'm well aware of.
It would just be an add on to Terminator Products
Which is a division of my joinery company
I have my Dealers licence & have plenty of existing accounts with wholesales some of which are very keen for me to do something
I would only start small, it won't be that flash & open 7 days or anything silly like that.
It really will be a supply & demand thing.
I already have plenty if primers, 162 Amaxs, Bergers etc for my existing clients
We will have to wait & see

Identical experience in the Napier shop trying to use my voucher up.
A lot of the stuff is lowest common denominator.. Maybe I'm too picky?

Wilheims is pretty much what you all describe.
He never made any money.. Then again it was basically a retirement hobby as he owned the building for 30 odd yrs apparently..
I've discussed it with a few people.
Also talked about buying a shop out... The person that did didn't last long as the numbers didn't work out.
If rent is free, then sweet.
I won't be giving up my day job any time soon
