A few drops of superglue (slower cure if you can find it) and screw the stud in fairly quickly and make sure it's aligned...

    Job done indeed! After sussing out the depth of material available in the stock, I marked a 4mm drill bit (masking tape) with length of thread +2mm, worked like a charm and stud was reassuringly tight winding in, cheers for the guidance
