Thread: Rangefinder advice

Think it is time i brought a rangefinder, on a budget, be shooting out to 300-350 max, been looking at the vortex impact 850. Says it will range animals out to 400 yards and is in my price range. Any other options i should consider? Thanks.

I had a Sig sauer kilo 1250 and loved it. Was light weight, very accurate and fast. Also had Line of sight or Angular modified range. Great for up or down hill ranging. I repeatedly ranged tahr at 750+ yards. Great unit only sold to upgrade to the 2400ABS with applied ballistics

Maybe look out for Leica 1600b 2nd hand. It's a older model but they do temp, incline, atm pressure and they range very accurately. Time and time again I hear people saying they bought a "budget" range finder and ended up with a Leica or other high end RF.

I’ve been down the path of budget & learnt the hard way & in the end ended up with a Leica & never looked back!

Problem with cheaper rangefinders is what they’ll laser off or in what conditions they’ll operate in

Keep an eye out for a Leica 1000 as they don’t have all the bells and whistles but they’ll laser off what you generally point them at, the optics are also good so you can use it as a monocular

Had a Nikon one that would Range matt targets, animals, trees etc to 600 and reflective surfaces to 1000. Price was ok and it worked until I lost it.
Replaced with a Leopold rx 1200 or similar last year. Smaller and will range matt surfaces out further.
if you only shot to 400, unless you are shooting rabbits you probably don't need too many extras.

Have a look in a golf warehouse for rangefinders, the mrs came home with one (she plays golf) as,i wouldnt let her borrow mine. $240 i laughed then took it out with my sig. Bugger me out to 1000 yds they were within 5 yds of each other. It wont do angles, temp pressure but will do continuous ranging. Value for money in my opinion, especially for the distances you are contemplating where the fancy stuff isnt needed.

Bushnell Conx are end of line, you can pick them up for $550 on Trademe in NZ now. Only problem is you'll have no reason to miss

Just bought one online , I will report back when it arrives .
For me its the 250m -350m ranges that I struggle to estimate accurately.
Over 350m I dont shoot as Im not dialing my scopes and holdover becomes very dodgy.

Leupold for me. On my second one after laser stopped functioning properly, 12yrs of abuse. Leupold warranty is fantastic, was offered 60% off a new one. Can't fault them.

Following this as I have a Leica 1200 but it doesn't have an inclinometer built into it, getting to the point where I need to take other variables into account

Sig Sauer 2400ABS is very good. Buy once cry once.
