    Rangefinder recommendations

Hay team, in the next few weeks I'll be looking to purchase a rangefinder. I'm looking to range to 1000 max and hopefully it can calculate angle also. Any recommendations on best bang for your buck? Importing etc. I'm all ears. Funds are a bit tight at present as I'm just starting out so I'll have around 500 to 600 max

I’ve had two Vortex 1500. The first one I lost. It was ok but not the best by any means, very dependant on having a fresh battery. Was ok to about 750m.

The second Vortex however ranges effortlessly to 1200m+ in good conditions (haven’t tried it past that) 800-900m in grey darker conditions easily. Again, haven’t really tried it past that kind of range, which is more than enough for me. Will pick out deer or goats at 800m as advertised. Is very quick to range as well, which is important, and bloody accurate. HCD works perfectly. It is as good as any small rangefinder of any make that I’ve ever come across. What is different to the first one is a mystery to me.

I have found that not all rangefinders will do what they are supposed to do. E.g. my shooting buddy’s Leica 1600B can be pretty ordinary in average light and my current Vortex will easily outperform it, whereas my first Vortex wouldn’t, it would also struggle. That Leica is his second, the first one went back for even worse performance...

For the money you want to spend, you will struggle in NZ to get a good bankable 1000m unit, unless second hand.

I'm happy to buy second hand or import, I have time. Its advice like this that is useful. Just don't want to buy a dud.

The SW-1500A could be a good prospect too.
