    Re-barrel decision - need a nudge

    Wanting to re-barrel the Model 7 .223.

Have come down to a few ideas but before dumping a bit of coin I am after some opinions. Prefer not to have to faff with replacing bottom metal/ having detachable mags or modifying bolt face. FWIW it's my 0 - 200m-ish bush rig.
So far I am thinking either:

    1. Faster twist .223.
Already have dies, brass etc, but may be hamstrung by mag length somewhat.

    2. 300blk.
Retain bolt size, gain a bit of diameter and choice in projectiles.
Easy to find dies, lee trimmer etc.

    3. 6x45 (6mm .223)
I guess kind of best of both, but hard to find dies it seems.
    Can share projectiles with the.243.

    Thoughts?

Would the 77's fit in the standard mag box?

From a purely economic perspective - sell your current rifle and buy one that suits your new purpose.

I have been down the track of building a 6x45 . I think that the cost vs the actual benefit is hard to define . Im sure I have far more money in my rifle than I will ever recoup by selling it ......

    But its your project

Like he says 223, fast twist, big bullet. Easy to find components, dies, and barrels, reamers etc

If you are having the barrel chambered in NZ find someone with the correct chamber reamer to suit your bullet, freebore, and magazine length easy peasy

6x45 will give you 85gr Sierra HP at mag length with normal seating depth to base of neck. They run sweet out of 1:8 - 1:10 barrels.

That's kinda the conundrum. Want to shoot heavy pills but the caveat (for myself, personally) is not having external magazine.

Brain says 1-7 / 1-8 .223 but I like tinkering so heart is saying.300. Unfortunately I have a lot of mouths to feed so realistically can't do both.

The 300 black out would probably need an extractor modification to eject the short case at 1 to 2 o clock rather than 3 o clock. Which Leeds to a jam.

How involved is that @Friwi? And would it prevent winding back on the.223 barrel at some point?

Basically the most common fix is fitting a Sako extractor or m16 extractor like on the howa. I think true flight and a few other outfits can do it.it is not cheap, maybe $400 ish but don’t quote me on that .
There is no issues to revert back to another barrel after the modification. When Remington launch the 300 blackout and the 221 and 17 fireball, they changed the position of their extractor to sort out the problem. But only on those rifles chambered in those short cases.
