    Rem 700 Conversion

I know there are a few Remington model 7 and model 700s out there in 7mm SAUM. Can you convert a 7mm08 by re barrel / re chamber and opening up the bolt face easy enough or do you really need to find something like a 270 or 300 WSM if you want the short action?

    Thanks,
    Dylan.

Re-chamber and open up bolt face will work, but you will probably need to put a sako style extractor as well. The mag box will need replacing as well as it will be too narrow for the fat SAUM cartridge. Possibly open up feed rails as well.

Finding the 284 a bit underpowered or you just want something new?

I am not sure if I would be willing to fire a rechambered Remington 7 7-08 barrel into 7saum.
There is not much meat on it. The Remington saum barrel profile is way thicker than a stand Remington 7 barrel.

Exploring some other ideas that I have seen and like the look of for future tinkering. The 284 is definitely not going anywhere haha.

What about .284 Shehane? Three grains or so over a standard .284 Win, and something pretty different.

Would be possible on a standard 700 i should imagine as there is a bit more meat in the chamber area, but as others have said it wont be cheap but on the plus side it might give you a bit more room than the 284 due to the shorter case length. Maybe there is a use for my 708 after all .
