    remington 700 .308 project

    hi team,

so i was chatting with one of the local gurus on the weekend about his powder stocking fettish's and on the side he got me thinking about putting a project together (one that i admit i have wanted to do for a while).

i want to build a .308 remington 700 by xmas 2012 and would like you guys to critique the barrel and action (the two components i cant afford to cock up).

i havent really ventured into the custom build territory yet so this is a warm up, plus i just really f#$%^ want a .308 remington.
    1. remington 700 action (is there any difference between models and quality ie xrc? vs sps vs other?) and what short action calibre actions could i use for the build with limited or no modification?
    2. the barrel id opt for could be a trueflight ultra match 20", non fluted 1:10 (right twist for 150grns to 180grns?) for 500m? what contour or style type would you reccomend to replicate the tactical type fat barrel of the LTR? i do prefer short and fat unlike my women.
    3. ideally id like to mat black coat the action and barrel. who does the hardest best wearing coats in NZ?

    bare with the virgin

    thanks

Im no expert Morgan but 1/11 or even 1/12 should be plenty for up to 180gr

Oh and good to see you have seen the light and want a .308

why not buy the tactical?? 308 is a cal that seams to be easy to get to shoot, already comes black an short barrel just get rid of the gay houge that they com with.

an at end of day you will have a heavy tank

hahahahh the light>!!!! i dont think so just wanna dump the tikka and get a quality short action!!!! and have a bit of fun getting there!!!

all seriousness though i would have thought for the lighter projectiles at faster speeds the 1:10 would be ideal?

    i am learning though

do you know what style trueflight contour type would replicate the LTR?

after hauling the .300 heavy works for me

Match rifle contour an 1:11 get you from 150gr to 200gr so be heaps an 20" tube, if you really want to do the build

Just wait an be fast they come up on trademe cheep every now an then for rem700 S/A, can give you a hand to put it together an gives you excuse to come down

I have number5 on the 7mm, are going longer an lighter contour on the next.

standard.................... Remington 700 Tactical Rifle SPECIAL! | Trade Me

As far as mag length goes, my 308s are the LEAST fussy on lengths.
My F-TR gun is a Sendero with over 6.5mm jump when fed from the AI mag and will shoot 0.25"

I find the 308 as a whole, isnt the fussy on pills, powder and length - just seems to work

I've found accubonds, interbonds, ssts and ballistic tips shoot better less jump which is why I ask. Keen to get another .308 but need to find something other than a Tikka!

Maybe, but my Rem doesnt care with what it gets fed SST, BT and Nosler CCs - not shot AB or IBs in it.

The 308 is boring but then when you consider its versatility, componenst cost & consistently accurate it's a hard cartridge to ignore

That makes it even more boring... Will take so long to burn the barrel out so you can change it to something exciting...
If it's not a first round hit you need to practice more
