    Remington 788

What are people’s thoughts on the good old Remington 788? Been offered a tidy example in 7mm07 TM for $475, and I’m seriously considering it. I know the bolt has been known to snap off, but my understanding is that was mostly due to people hand loading too hot, causing the case to swell in the chamber and jamming the bolt forward, making the shooter give the bolt a good whack to get it open. This shouldn’t be an issue with factory ammo though? Anyone had any hands on experience?

Hi Cam, I have one in 308 and love it.
The rifle was mean't from my understanding to be a budget offering from Remington and come under the Model 700 but it proved to be an extremely accurate rifle and a lot of the bench rest crowd picked it up.
Mine shoots very well , better than I do .
Starting to get a bit of a cult following and maybe some collectable status in the future. I would say go for it.

I didn't know they came out in that Cal. Might have been rebarrelled at some stage.

I started culling in the NZFS on goats using one in 222 Rem in the mid 70's, Very accurate, we were using factory Sako ammo so no problems with cases getting stuck. I wish I still had mine. Probably the only negative if you could call it that is the rear locking action but with factory ammo no worries.

The only down side I find is the rattley little mag, I am a floor plate kinda guy, but yes very accurate, Mine in triple two will shoot to MOA from a very pitted barrel.

I wasn't expecting much as I have a couple of pretty accurate Tikka's and a Rem 700 that shot pretty good also. I got it suppressed and the Gunsmith did pass a comment that the model shoot very well in general but I didn't really take it on board.
This group was with 150 gr Fiocchi factory soft point ammo, 100 mtrs just shooting over a pack.
I think it was 11 mm from memory and that's 4 shots , 40 year old rifle that totally surprised me.
God know's what it would do with a decent rest, trigger job and a better shooter with hand loads.Name: IMG_20190505_150445.jpg
