Thread: removeing duracoat (or similar )

have a stunning custom-built long-range that a fellow built, and I brought it off his estate

it has stunning wood stocks and everything, and it's almost like he skipped the last part and painted the thing
It looks like plastic and doesn't suit the rifle at all

I want to do it properly and rust blue it, but I need to get it off
It's not just paint, it's some sort of proper firearm paint like Duracoat

how do I remove without damaging the steel

Not much withstands methylene chloride paint stripper and that won't damage steel.

Yeah start off easy, meths will remove some coatings including etch primers but normally for harder stuff like two packs you will need a decent stripper, just make sure you use plenty of PPE, that shit is like Napalm when it hits ya skin

media blasting , maybe . Walnut shell perhaps?

If its painted it was most probably media blasted beforehand. I would madia blast it to remove.

If that doesn’t work ill try something more aggressive
