    Replacing a Tikka barrel

Has anyone replaced the barrel on their T3?
Is it a job pretty much all gunsmiths can do?
    Is it a expensive job?

Found a barrel on Trademe I wouldn't mind trying, just not wanting to sink a lot of money into a project that I don't really need to embark on.

    Cheers

    Its easy.
Any gunsmith that finds it hard, isn't a gunsmith.

10 minute job. $40 would be expensive (depending on the person doing it)

If it was just a straight swap then yes should be quick and inexpensive, however if the barrel needs to be threaded, chambered, or set back etc then cost will go up

Mine cost 150 to thread for suppressor and swap over
Didn't take a professional gunsmith just a talented engineer
I did think it was a bit on the high side but am happy with the result
That reminds me anyone willing to sell or lend me some no go gauges in 308?

Gun Works swapped barrels on one of my T3s (300WM for 7mmRM). Cheap if you are not worried about indexing. (The writing on my new barrel is on the wrong side and up side down). I think it was about $60 all up. The cost will obviously go up the more time they spend on it.

The wrighting on mine is also off and ended up nearly hidden under the scope bell
On my 280 when Mitch Maxberry rechambered it from 7mm08 (also tikka t3) he set back the barrel so that it was hidden under the hand guard and restamped the barrel

That's why you take it to a gunsmith. No go and go gauges are part of the cost

    Cheers all,
Not worried about indexing or thread, would just want it fitted amd checked for head space.

Will call a few places tomorrow, but sounds pretty straightforward.

It’s not a difficult job technically, but they are screwed on very hard and don’t give up easily. That means the old barrel can get marked up when it’s taken off. Not a problem if it’s going to be scrapped, but could be if you want to sell it on.

Like others have said, mine has the designation in the wrong place. In fact, it says 7mm-08, but it’s a .284 Win now, which is fine unless I sell it.

While my barrel was off I had my ‘smith machine the small transition off the face of the action and fit a Rem style recoil lug, which I then bedded into the plastic stock.

Mine had to to get set back and have the lugs lapped as only one was touching.

Interesting. My gunsmith in the US (Chad Dixon at LRI) told me that he had rebarreled a lot of Tikkas and done custom builds on quite a few. His opinion was that they are so true that any gunsmith who charges for blueprinting them is basically ripping the customer off.

Perhaps you had the rare Friday afternoon action.
