Replica Winchesters for the chop??

Ive got a uburti 66 Replica Winchester 1866
Ive been tossing up weather to hand in for the chop saw
Or get modified currently holds 11rounds
I only shoot it a couple of times a year and would probably be better off with a 44 mag for what i do anyway

Apparently according to the police website it has to be Processed as a Unique firearm
And so they give no indication of its value (in there eyes)

Which for me is a big thing if it’s paying good money I think ill hand it in
If not ill get it modified

Has anyone handed something like this in

Modification to 10 rounds is easy and leaves the rifle externally original. Go online and register your intention to modify and the Police will pay for it.

But there’s no approved gunsmith local to me
How do i go about getting the rifle to someone that can do it
I could do it in 5 minutes by braseing a peice of round stock to the end cap of the mag
But apparently im not allowed?

Just do it, when are they ever going to look at it and you can just say you bought it like that.

Neil Hayes of Neil Hayes and Associates who have been the Uberti agent since the 90's put out, a few months back, a one pager on how to mod the Uberti tubes. The mod was even approved by the Uberti factory.

However, I cannot find his document. It was sent out to Antique Arms members and I think it was also published in NZ Guns & Hunting. I couldn't find it on his website.

I am sure if you contacted him he would send you a copy. It wasn't rocket science though, just extending the length of the end plug.

Yes, you can do the job your self. Just remove the end cap and weld (or braze) on a piece of 3/16" (4.8mm) steel rod that will go down inside the spring and restrict the travel of the follower. With the M66 repros measure from the front edge of the loading gate the length of 10.5 cartridges and put a felt pen mark on the mag tube, measure from the mark to the front of mag tube, deduct the length of the end cap and that is correct length for the rod. Put a nice radius on the end of the rod to prevent fouling the spring. Easy peasy!
